I do a lot of this. Not stuff that's awesome, but just content ready to share. Right out of the gate, I NEED to tell you to be sparse in the editorial work. Effects can ruin a compilation and takes away from the content. Think Michael Bay: You can't polish a turd, but you could highlight the actual work. A bad video is just that, and shouldn't be spiced with effects to make it watchable. If you're playing "Money For Nothing", the focus should be on the frets, added effort in the backing cast, and the only effect inserted should be lean yet useful.
That's just my opinion of guitar playing on video. If you mean an actual music video, I've been there too, and the same rules apply. The more you edit and produce, the better the content...be lean on graphics and the easy stuff. KoRn's "Got the Life" wasn't full of cheesy transitions. Anyone can buy a program to do this, but not everyone can play guitar...catch me? Don't mask it man. Just don't be that good singer that autotunes just to fit in...and you can autotune anything from an iPhone. Be a producer first.
I'm lethargic myself. The old stuff still works and haven't found good usage for the newer programs to really go to town with. I use TMGenc, PaintShop Pro 8, and Animation Shop8 for the majority of stuff I just want to share. When I make an ad for someone else that really has to shine, that's really the only time Adobe Premier fires up. I'm sure there's new stuff out there, but the old payed-for stuff is still working just fine.
Just depends on what you're looking for I guess. Start small and work up. I spend a lot of time in fanciful videos, but to my heart I like the ones I mash out in a few hours the best. Like the guitar, it's emotion that you have to play with brother. You don't need a transition effect by some program to relay that IMO. The video will speak for the music at hand with minimal editing.
I've got vids of mimicking Eddie and SRV; but my most basic video, in it's most raw form, has to do with Family feelings. Sending my step-daughter out to a fuck-head and her staying strong on the way out, it's a blank, and this one rare instance that she's on my flight home and get to bring her in.
Simple video. It's our favorite even though it's made with dated software. Got a "wheels down" vid all doctored up in premier, but this simple one is our favorite. Editorial work; please do it or the emotions aren't there. If you play 316, I think the video should represent it far before slide effects come into play.
Windows Movie Maker is free, does transitions, and does what you need. When you've exhausted that, we can start spending $100 or so. I repeat, it's in the content production that a video is replied toward.
It's all in the editing room, and leave it on the floor if need be
