Maximum PC

I recently installed Crysis 2 on my desktop computer. It crashes near the end of the first level, then continues to crash if I try to reload the last save point. Restarting the campaign seems to work, but the game crashes after reaching the same approximate location again. I am running Win 7 64 with an NVidia 8800 GT graphics card. Tech support from the game mfg seems to be non-existant. I have the latest version of the game from what I can tell.

what is the rest of your system, cpu and memory, your video card is the minimum necessary, 8800gt with 512 of memory. you could try lowering game settings, you may be trying to play with the settings to high for your system.

My system should meet the minimum requirments. I have:

Let the game detect your hardware and set the settings for you. It sounds like something is overheating...like the video card for instance.

Open the side of the case and point a house fan at it at high speed, if the game runs it is a heat issue for sure.

you might also try running in DX9 mode...it will take a big load off the video card.

the minimum hardware was revised as of game release, one thing that changed was video card.

I doubt it's an overheating problem. The program crashes as soon as the saved game is loaded right after starting the game, not after playing for some period of time. Also, if I restart the campaign I can play up to about the same point in the first level, i.e. I kill the bad guys and start exploring.

You could back up your saves and reinstall the game. Something may have been corrupted.

Those are the minimum specs to run the game and it doesn't, time to upgrade the video card to a 6950 at least.
