Greetings all :)

I recently purchased a used computer from the college I attend and I would like to connect it to the Internet using the same cable line I use with my current PC. I'm not sure, and please correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't it serve me better to purchase another modem for this used PC then hook up both computers to a router connected to my ISP cable?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated before I spend any money

Thank you :)

Quite the contrary. Most ppl will want one modem shared via a router. That’s the whole point of the router, to share the single resource of the modem/internet. In most cases, the ISP is going to charge you a subscription PER MODEM! So it’s not exactly cost effective. The router also creates a local, switched network for those two computers, so they can share resources among themselves (printers, shares, etc.). Plus it never hurts to have the protection of the router’s firewall instead of managing firewalls on each computer. Having each only connected to its own modem means the only resource they share in common would be the internet (not ideal).

So get yourself a router like 99.99999% of most ppl do, it's the right move.

Location: A place not actively occupied by something else.
Diagram of a normal person's network:
Internet---->ISP----->modem------>router----->multiple PCs
Your proposed setup:
Internet--------ISP-------------Modem-\
..................................................|>Combiner thingy--------Router----------------PCs
Internet--------ISP-------------Modem-/
Just use the modem you have now and connect the yellow cable from that to a router, or in your case, an Ethernet switch, and then connect your PCs to that.
