I just got a Samsung SH-B123L/BSBP ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003XIM3QK ) and i have the following system setup:

Windows 7 Home Premium x64
Intel i7-970 ( http://www.amazon.com/Intel-i7-970-Proc ... B003UATLOS ), stock speeds/clocks
2x 5870 in Crossfire, hooked to 3x 24" monitors in portrait mode
12GB of Corsair DDR3 RAM (1066MHz, i think)
Asus Rampage III Gene motherboard, mATX
1.5TB storage across 4 drives
Primary player: Media Player Classic HTPC player 1.5.0 ( x64 version )
Secondary player: VLC Media Player
850W Corsair PSU

i cannot seem to play BluRays on my computer like i thought i could. when trying MPC, it says that the video cannot be encoded, and VLC player says it (the video) cannot be loaded. neither of them crash my system when i try to open the disc, but i thought with the hardware supported playback of MPC, BluRays on my setup would be very smooth and doable. i would not mind having the bezels in the way during playback, but i am stuck on trying to open the disc.

am i in need of a new piece of player software? the BluRay drive came with i think CyberPower or CyberLink (?) software, but i am hesitant on loading it. Windows 7 installed drivers when i powered my PC on, and said "the hardware was installed successfully". i have not tried Media Center or Windows Media Player, yet.

Neither MPC or VLC can play back an encrypted Blu-Ray.

You'll either have to spring for playback software (did the drive not come with at least an OEM version of PowerDVD?) or you'll need to somehow decrypt the disc first, with software such as AnyDVD HD.

the Software the drive came with includes

CyberLink PowerDVD 9
CyberLink PowerProducer 5
CyberLink MediaShow 5
CyberLink Power2Go 6
CyberLink IntstantBurn 5
CyberLink LabelPrint 2
CyberLink BDAdvisor 2
LightScride (lightscribe model only)

I will give PowerDVD a try, and see what happens.

After installing the entire CyberLink suite, updating it and rebooting my computer, it still doesn't work, and i am getting the following message:

i am running Catalyst 11.6 with the Radeon XCodec pack ( 11-6_vista_win7_32-64_xcode ) but it still gives me the message. PowerDVD also asked me to register and purchase the full version to possibly unlock playback. not wanting to spend a dime, i resorted to torrenting a keygen, which i then used to activate it, but still no go.

Then i found the following thread ( http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview. ... did=121021 ) which summed up my issue with a sack of fail.

If I just run an HDMI cable to my TV from the card, and don't have any monitors grouped, I can play Blu Ray just fine (really well in fact). What threw me off was the error message said the problem was the driver, not that the resolution was not supported.

Anyway, if anyone else had this problem, this is what fixed it for me.

That thread is almost two years old. If this was a driver issue, I'd be certain it's been addressed by AMD now.

FWIW, Since blu-ray is a proprietary format and I think you're still looking to install a blu-ray codec from somewhere as I don't believe PowerDVD 9 is all you need here.

PowerDVD 9 should work for him.

bingo: you can also download the trial of TotalMedia Theatre 5.

Have you tried disabling eyefinity to test if that's the issue?

I just unbound my eyefinity setup, so now all 3 monitors are clones of each other.

1. I reinstalled PowerDVD9
2. Put BR disc in the drive
3. Cracked PowerDVD9, because it kept asking me to update and upgrade when i tried to open the BR
4. Tried to play BR again (region 1 Top Gear/BBC & Anime Region A)

both discs load to about 38%, then the program crashes/exits. no error windows or messages, no disabled Aero message.

I am wondering then about my monitor connections - i have 3 ASUS VE248H's ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0043T7FHK ) and they are connected to my primary 5870 by DVI+DVI+DP adapter>VGA. Am i supposed to be using HDMI to play BluRay content? That to me sounds like the easiest fix, switching a DVI to HDMI.

One would think...although I don't remember when cyberlink starting shipping blu-ray support in their products...

it said something about HDCP compliant/compatibility, but this was when i still had the monitors grouped. the HDCP was in relation to both my "graphics adapter" or my display (which i think is monitor). i passed the other stuff.

i just got to work, but i did replace one of the DVI cables with an HDMI one before leaving, but now my monitors are turned around, and did not finish setting them all to portrait mode (ungrouped). I hadn't run the BD Advisor while ungrouped, but will soon as i get home tonight.

Blu-ray 3D disc and TrueTheater 3D
CyberLink PowerDVD 10 3D playback support 120Hz time-sequential LCD + shutter glasses (NVIDIA 3D Vision), 3D Ready HDTV (Checkerboard) + shutter glasses, polarization LCD + polarized glasses and regular monitor + anaglyph red/cyan glasses.

Note: CyberLink PowerDVD with NVIDIA 3D Vision is not supported under Windows Vista and XP.


Right now, i have HDMI+DVI+VGA/DP adapter for my connections. Thanks for all the help, so far!

i am getting closer, i think but i do not actually have this solved, yet. i have just been working backwards from "oh i just need a new player to use for just blu-rays" to "why isn't my hardware compatible?"

i did thank you all for the help in my last post, but no, i still am trying to get this to work.

i might end up installing the BR drive on my alt PC to see if it will work there, since the display's only on one screen. Even when the Advisory tool says i passed, i still cannot get BR's to play. I am not sure which window to believe - the Basic or the Advanced test. i ran them both 3 times to make sure that i was not fudging the numbers with certain programs running.

ok...so maybe clarify what happened when you said you just go it to work and replaced the DVI with an HDMI and then what you're working towards....because at this point you're not making much sense.

ok sorry i re-read my post. i meant to mean that i went to my "day job"/place of work, but before i left for work, i replaced a cable. i had not meant got the BR to work. really sorry for the confusion.
