m on windows 7 64 bit home premium..out of a sudden m having this problem of windows not detecting my dvd rom..Its a writable dvd rom but when i insert any dvd it doesnt read it and says insert a disk.. i went to the disk management section and found out there theres NO dvd rom or anything there...surprisingly its missing....
an anybdy plzzz help me to create a dvd rom or something....
would be really really grateful!

May be a software issue; may be a hardware issue.

Before we get into that... how's it look in Device Manager?
In devmgmt, find the DVD drive, and open its Properties sheet. Is it in an error state ('device cannot start')? If yes, what error code (and text) is displayed there?

It says "this device is working properly"

I would start with the UpperFilters / LowerFilters fix that's described here:

Give that a go, and see how it works. If it doesn't fix it, the worst that it could do is 'break' some functionality of certain third-party apps (usually disc-mastering or burning apps.) But, those don't work on that PC ATM, anyways...

Actually i already have done that..didnt resolve the issue...

Just clarifying-the laugh was for the last line of ur msg and not the whole suggestion...

How about if you uninstall it from within device manager and then reboot and let windows find it and reinstall it.

I had this exact problem. i fixed it by checking the cables for the dvd rom. it plugged in the cables all the way and everything. long story short, the power cable i was using was staring to go bad. i would check these things.
