for a paid AV i would have to say ESET NOD32 hands down blows them all out of the water.

every time Maxpc does a Anti Virus show down ESET always gets a 9 Kick Ass award.

i have used it just recently and as always its super light on the resources.

as far as free AV i would have to say that Microsoft Security Essentials is very decent aswell.

I have been using free Avira Anti-virus with Malwarebytes as a companion and free Zonealarm for my firewall and have had no problems.

All are free, work well for me and I play a lot of games online.

I'm gonna have to agree with Nasty here. Avira and Malwarebytes is a solid free security solution. I've used MSE plenty of times, but Avira is better. The new version of MSE currently in beta looks very promising though. SuperAntiSpyware I think is even better for malware these days. Windows 7 firewall is more than sufficient if you don't already sit behind a hardware firewall.

I think MacAfee is perfect antivirus for any gaming PC. I am also using this from many years and for me it’s the best antivirus that I can suggest you.

Mcafee will slow your system to a crawl, it was also rated #4 out of ten in Max Pc. I use Microsoft Essentials and it works just fine and does not slow my system down. I am a heavy gamer and it doesn't interfere with gaming in any way at all.

I recommend you to use avast antivirus. the main reason is it's free to use. It's featurs are good to kill trozzan viruses. You can also try avira, avg, Norton bt Avast is the best.

No problems at all so far and I have been using it for a year. I also installed it on my friends business computers and they are very happy as well. I use Malwarebytes to fight maleware along side of MSE on my computers and friends and families. I always uninstall Nortons and McAfee....junk in my humble opinion.

http://www.av-comparatives.org/en/compa ... ry-reports is a good read. ESET and some others won on low-impact if you care about that. Otherwise Kaspersky won overall.

I still use MSE. It hasn't given me problems. I also use a paid version (it's only $30 one-time) Malwarebytes Anti-Malware in conjunction. However I don't like Anti-Malware blocking websites willy nilly. I had to turn that feature off. It doesn't ask if you're sure if you want to go to that website, it basically makes it so you can't access it.

In what ways is MSE inadequate ?

What advantages do the non-free AV programs, like Kaspersky, have over it ?

Anti-virus programs all have their flaws, not one of them can protect you 100%

Free anti-virus programs work just as well as the paid versions, the only difference I can see is the paid version runs all the time while you have to manually run a scan with the free versions (this is why the paid versions usually slow the computer down). MSE runs all the time and is not a resource hog like Nortons or MacAfee. As I said before, I use MSC along with Malwarebytes and have no problems with my pc in gaming or anything else.

What ever you decide to do, make sure you thoroughly un-install the old anti-virus program you are using...including all files and folders along with any registry entries or you will have problems.
