Yesterday, I was at a friend's house to help with installing some security software. After successfully installing the software, I checked the Linksys WRT350N (v. 1.0) router that was between her AT&T DSL modem (a Speedstream 4100) and her Dell Dimension 3000 computer to see if the firmware on the router needed to be updated. After being denied access to the web interface for the router, I performed a hard reset of the router and logged in to the web interface with the default username and password and reset everything properly for her type of internet connection (per the AT&T support page concerning the use of third-party routers) and found that the router had the latest firmware revision installed. Shortly thereafter, I began to experience intermittent problems with surfing the web and the DSL light would sporadically turn red on the DSL modem and there would also be no Internet light on the modem (a more persistent issue). Then I was informed that this had been a problem for sometime and that she had actually taken the router out of the connection completely at one time. So I bypassed it again and all seems to be well.
After I got home last night, I checked for possible third-party firmware replacements and found that DD-WRT could be flashed onto this particular router model. My question is this: Would it be feasible to attempt to flash this router with DD-WRT in order to get it working again? The Linksys firmware revision that is on this router is not only the latest, but is about three years old, and voiding the warranty on this router is a moot point as it is not under warranty.

DD-WRT has lots of features, but it's a little bit buggy. However, I still think it's an issue with your modem and not your router. In any case, just be sure to flash it with the proper stable/current version. If you flash the firmware back to Linksys, how could they tell the difference? :P

Thanks for the reply, Airheadq! You are right about the DSL modem. After researching the support site at AT&T Yahoo! yesterday and talking to my cousin (who actually set the router up between the computer and the modem), I discovered that the modem was not set up in bridged mode and that both the modem and the router were trying to use PPPoE to connect the computer to the ISP. I will be correcting this tomorrow.
