I have a spare P3 - 900 Mhz computer sitting around doing nothing. It works, it's just it's a bit too old to run any of the Windows OSes (and I don't have a copy of Windows XP to use on it).

Here's what the computer's got (I'm looking for a good Linux distro to use on it):
Pentium 3 - 900 Mhz (might actually be a 933 Mhz)
256 MB of RAM
32MB Video (onboard Intel 810 chipset, so I think it has only like 16MB of onboard video, which is shared with the system's RAM)
10/100 network card
standard 16-bit sound
40 GB IDE hard drive

Are there any good distros out there that can run on this machine? All I really want to do with it is use it as a web browsing computer, and maybe some typing using OpenOffice or something similar. Suggestions?

I'd like an OS that I can install, but I'll take a bootable "Live" OS if there is no other alternatives.... I did look into FreeBSD 8.2... but am not sure if this computer would run the GUI version of it.

What about AV and Firewall apps? Is there any lightweight distributions that support those features as well?

No need for an extra app for firewall, you can configure iptables...

Not sure about the current available Linux AV applications... only need for one though would be to help prevent spreading to Windows PCs.

My brother in law mentioned that I look into Linux MINT, so I may do that. Main thing is that I need a working GUI that is reasonably fast and responsive enough to surf the Internet. Don't really plan to do much more than that, other than maybe test the websites I design and work on (for compatability issues, etc).

Additionally, will most Linux distros install to a 20GB partition? I'm actually going to dual-boot the P3 probably with Windows XP (if I can find a copy) but I only have a 40GB IDE drive (and the computer is not worth spending any money on to get a bigger drive).

Like I said, I only need pretty much the basics: a text editor, a few web browsers for testing, and maybe run OpenOffice. No movies, video, or music. Just mainly for testing websites and web browsing/typing.

Yeah, 20 GB is lots .. particularly for the slim builds described in the link I provided.
