I have a big typhoon 12 that i lost the thumb screws for mounting. I have a 9800 GX2 that runs hot. What if I were to take the plastic shroud off the card, exposing the heat sink, solder the heat pipes and fins of the typhoon to the heat sink of the card? Would that even work, or am I just pissing in the wind? I have a bender for the heat pipes. I would put them as far in the card as possible.

IF you do it, in order for it to work, you'll need to use a fairly high-temp solder. Otherwise the heat from the card will cause the solder to melt, and well, you can kiss it all goodbye rather quickly, and I don't JUST mean the 9800GX2.

Do you think there would be enough heat transfer to make it worth the effort?

I have to say that you would probably have to use a torch to get the kind of heat that would be required to "solder" the heat sinks together. I won't say don't do it but, I will say that there maybe a better way than what you are trying.
Have you thought about water cooling? http://www.dangerden.com/store/dd-9800gx2-block.html

I am not that worried about it to spent that kind of money. Besides for that amount of money I could buy a new card that runs cooler and produces more points. There isn't a lot of options to cool a 9800GX2. I was just coming up with ideas that no one has tried. I am not saying I am going to do it, I was just curious if that would work. What about a thermal adhesive? I have had luck with that in the past.

That's cool I wasn't sure what your plan was, now that I know that then I would say That I saw some preety different ideas like using two heatsinks together with springs and stand offs to help with the tension.

Having taken apart a 9800gx2, I don't think you're going to find an attachment point that will conduct enough of the heat into your heatpipes for it to be worthwhile.
