i just did this with my wife's and my pc

using hdclone

I got new hd for xmas and so the mrs got my old one to replace the asstastic one she had (maxtor 120GB IDE drive...bleh.) I got a hitachi 1TB drive (sata) and she now has my old hitachi 500GB (sata)

the UBCD has the free (slow // limited) version of HDclone and some other cloning tools I've not used so can't say how good or not good they are. I am going to try PING I think at some point but haven't had a chance yet. I've used trueimage in the past and it is fine also.

I can say with absolute certainly the HDclone worked without problems for both of my recent hd migrations and has worked for other migrations without difficulties in the past.

CopyWipe is also a great option that is included with the UBCD. It is much faster than HDClone and also supports USB drives.

However, it is in a DOS-based window rather than full GUI. It is easy to understand though.

I have a copy of Norton Ghost 2003... Think it'll work?

I suppose I should also throw in a wrinkle.
I have what I take is an older board that support SATA and not SATS2.

My WIN7 install sits on a WD Raptor RAID 0 config - supported by the MOBO (not a stand alone RAID card).
Plan is to migrate this install to a SSD which is an SATA2 - thought I read in the magazine SATA2 was backward compatible so that using it on a SATA board would be OK.

I know my copy of WINXP requires drivers to use the RAID config but am assuming since the BIOS supports the RAID config naitively, that when I fire up whatever DOS tool to do the migration, I shouldn't run into any problems.

But....

So why did I install WIN 7 on a RAID 0?

Well, was just playing around with the OS and wasn't ready to make the switch to using as a primary.
And since the RAID 0 gave me maximum speed (since it sat on a pair of Raptors), seemed like a fun thing to do : )

One thing that keep me from seriously considering WIN 7 was the migration of my iTunes library.
Seemed to take a while figuring out how I'd proceed WITHOUT:
- having to reload my iPod
- losing my play counts!

That barrier licked, I think I'm ready to reply on WIN 7 now but of course, don't want to reply on a OS that is considerably more fragile than my XP install since it sits on two HD's...

I'll be waiting for another 6+ months to get an SSD for my laptop. It will SCREAM when I do though. :)

I am thinking about installing Win 7 to a CF card to run a media center box on.

I contacted KINGSTON and they provided me a free copy of ACRONIS - resolved!!!

Still need to rig my boot menu to look at the new drive for the WIN 7 install... that can be done using the WIN 7 install disk?
