I just wanted to get some feed back on the pros and cons of the two services (hopefully not starting a flame war). I was looking at setting up my home server to do vent (which I think will support 8 people at once). But then I've started to hear somethings about teamspeak.

Have you tried Skype? Some of us here use it for playing online poker and we regularly have at least 5-6 people on at once.

I haven't tried the two that you mentioned though.

I've done skype with just me and one other. Haven't tried it with larger groups. Vent seems to be very popular for large groups of people.

I've always liked Vent but I haven't used TS in some time. You also might want to check out Mumble as well. As far as I know if you host your own server you can put as many people on as you want, not just 8.

This might help.

I haven't tried teamspeak. Honestly, to me they are all the same except for the UI. Some say one has better quality than the other but I know its because some have dedicated servers, etc... I would just find one that is most common to the people you talk to. Having 4-6 VOIP clients is just stupid.

I use Vent, Teamspeak, and Skype all the time. For ease of use for only 8 people, I'd just go with Skype to be honest.

I thought Vent had a limit of 8 people for the free server program?

No idea, I'm webmaster of a WoW guild and I own a 50 player vent server. I'm a founder of a COD clan and we own a 100 or so player TS server.

I have no idea on the "free" limits of Ventrilo. That's why I recommend Skype for use with only 8 people it's easy to use.

Real question is, can your server handle the load of talking?

Have you been able to get the in game team chat to work in starcraft II? We use skype, but no one I know has gotten the chat in game to work or work for very long. Guess I should try it out again.

We have used it in the past and have played games where other players were using it. We just prefer Vent.

My friends and I always just use Skype. I don't understand why it's not more popular for gaming honestly. It works perfectly fine with 4 to 6 people at once, it's free, it's easy, and I no longer have 3 VOIP clients on my system with their own log in information etc...

Because most guilds or clans are comprised of more than 4-5 people. I agree though, I use it when we have our MPC Poker games when I actually have time to play, but I don't think it can handle 50+ people.
