I've come across this problem a lot lately in the gaming community. People will ask why their machine can't run a certain new game claiming their computer matches the minimum specs, however when I ask them to post their specs they'll mention they have a laptop. Unfortunately it's not just enough to tell them what all of us here know - laptop parts have to be deliberately scaled back to conserve power and heat. So I want to create a comparison chart showing what desktop GPUs match up performance-wise to laptop ones - unless there's already one out there that I didn't find when I was digging..

Well I can pretty much tell you the high-end stuff-
GTX 480M is about equal to a GTS 450.
GTX 460M is about equal to a GTS 250, there's not really a 400-series analog to it
Mobility Radeon HD 5870 is about equal to a 5750
Mobility Radeon HD 5850 is around a 4850, but faster than a 5670.

This has pretty good detailed info one notebook GPU's.

Also, you can't compare a 4xx to any other series as it has a different architecture. Rule of thumb for nVidia is that the mobile part will be as capable as the desktop part that is 2 less. So 9800m = 9600, and 480m = 460 (actual about a 465). You can check nVidia for manufacture specs and compare them as well.

notebookcheck is a great website since they have benchmarks for probably every mobile graphics chip ever made. Compare their benchmarks to the tomshardware desktop GPU charts benchmarks and that should give you a decent idea. They show extremely detailed benchmarks. Take a look at this chart!

They're different architecture, but I was equating performance. Also, a 480M is nowhere near a 465. While its the same GPU, a 480M runs at a pitiful 400Mhz... enough to knock it down the GTS 450 performance levels.

This topic has me rethinking the power of my 9600GT M. Man I fell so far behind. A year and a half gone and there's mGPUs three times the power of mine for the same price.

Right, but that is just to save power/lower heat and those are nVidia stock clocks. You can definitely get overclock it to higher speeds. The nowhere near is a bit harsh. The 480m has 352 Cuda cores versus the GTS 450's meager 192 and that does matter. But, honestly you can't be sure unless you benchmark them.

How about your CPU? For the same price a probably when you bought it, it has more cores, hyperthreading and TurboBoost.

Done:

i7-980X+SLi 480M gets edged out by SLi GTS 450+ i7-875K.

My only issue is the "i7-875K at 3.85GHz with EVGA Superclocked GTS 450 SLI." There is no mention of the clocks of the Clevo but I 'm going to have to assume they are stock. So yeah the healthy overclocks edged out the Clevo, but seeing as this is probably the closest to a direct bench, going to have to say the GTX 480m is faster than the (stock) GTS 450.
