Just a quick question here. Whats with all the bloody spam in the Article Comments Section? Every time I finish reading an article and want to read and or post a comment, I have to wade through a half dozen or more Spammed comments. Where is the site Admins?

Just asking Folks cause it seems to be getting worse.

Peace and Happy Thanksgiving to any Canucks Here!

In the sites/mods/admins defense, it is Sunday and there are not as many people around to look for spam. And remember all of us here (including most of the people that look for spam comments) are volunteers.

However, if you do see a spam comment, feel free to post it here or PM an admin/mod and someone will take care of it.

Can they add a "report spam" button to the posts on articles on the main site?

I do not know how to get into contact with whomever maintains MxPC website; however, I would like to make a suggestion here, and perhaps, if everyone likes it, it can be forwarded to whomever is in charge.

To begin, by now, we all know that these "spammers" are most definitely human, and that captcha, and moderation of the comments will not stop these spammers, and it appears the problem is only getting worse. I would like to propose the idea that we have a comment ranking system, in which comments are rated up, or down based on what users rate each post besides their own. In essence, the best/on-topic post make it to the top, whilst the spam post are pushed down and/or hidden from public view. This format/setup would be very similar to the one that Dailytech.com imposes on its commenting board, and it seems to work for them. Finally, users can "flag" a user that is spamming, so that an admin/moderator is notified, and can deactivate an account that is confirmed spamming.

I believe that this is the only way left to us to stop these human spammers from showing their advertisements until a moderator/admin can remove the comments and/or user altogether. This way we do not have to rely constantly on moderators/admins to be constantly vigilant in moderating the commenting board, and everyone can take action to get rid of these spammers asap.

the "captcha" does not work

I was adding a comment to a post the other day and when I typed in the word's for captcha I misspelled one of them, it still went through. I was expecting to have to resubmit, but nope went on in with the wrong text in the box.

Still believe they should have a few volunteers from the regulars, we all know who they are. Deputize them, make a sub forum. let them redirect any questionable comment to there for review, when its checked later by a full time paid staff member, they can dispose of or replace them as necessary in the appropriate manner.

This is how we used to handle it on a few forums I worked on/in back in the day. you just have it tagged as spam and moved to a review so nobody can cry foul if its gone, you can fix it.

my .02 cents or .0175 canadian

yeah but then they just crop back up under a different name or account. I say use what ever tech is required to ID repeat offenders then send them an electronic letter bomb that nukes their system. 8)

a lot of websites wont let you post unmoderated until you have a minimum number of "verified" posts

set the bar at around 15 or 20
till then, it dont go up, till somebody says its ok
again, I am sure there is SOMEBODY in the regulars that would be more than happy to assist in the endeavor

also, for the people who make multiple accounts, there is ip address monitoring. I'd be willing to volunteer for the spam duty (I browse the main site enough)

IP address blocking is not effective enough, though. Many people can simply use a proxy server, or simply release and renew their own IP addresses. Does this take time, yes; however, when someone is being paid to do it, the incentive to stop isn't strong.

Ive just about had enough with the crap i put up with on this site.

MaxPC on line has been finally getting better in terms of content over the past several months. But the problems with the site are WAY WAY WAY to frequent and substantial for me to waste very much more time here.

The least you could do is DELETE the fking spam. How long does that take, about 1 second? Your comments form is just terrible. My spell check doesn't work in it and the CAPTCHA is annoying as hell. If your not going to stop or even DELETE the flood of spam at least get rid of that crap. Pasting text from WORD copies all the code and makes my posts look like a damn cipher. Honestly, you need an entirely new comment form, its that bad.

The problems dont stop there. Im not running my monitor at 800x600 any more. I like to enlarge the web page with Ctrl+Scroll wheel, something I learned from YOUR mag. Well guess what, IT DOESNT WORK ON YOUR SITE. Every time i do it your page slows to a crawl.

Half the time when i load the page, the next page button at the bottom is missing. Cant press next or manually select what page i want.

Really guys, if you going to support and cover news regarding FireFox, at least make sure that your own site SUPPORTS some its features.

While I agree the comments section of the main site has a problems with spammers and the captcha is a pain in the------foot, I have never had a problem with the way the page displayed in either FireFox or IE 7 or 8. I also have so far never had a problem with spell check.

Really some problems with one segment of the site will cause you to drop the whole thing?? It must be a brass plated bitch to find a place to live or eat or people worthy of being your friend. Let alone finding a place or career that you can tolerate for more than 1 day.

Believe me I have no compunction about expressing displeasure with content or whatever, since I am a paying subscriber. Sometimes I even tend to get a bit harsh. But I sure am not going to subscribe to some wus rag like PC World that tells the world what the manufactures want you to hear. So you don't stray to far from the OEM's apron strings.

Hey, we have no problem with suggestions like this. Post away! FWIW, I think your idea is a good one, but I am hopping that we will be rolling out a solution in the next few days that should render moot this comments ranking scheme you suggest. To wit, I just received this from our product manager (the editors' interface to the dev team):

"Hi Jon, We're implementing [REDACTED], which is a 3rd party spam filtering module which has a great reputation. It's been on MaxPc staging for a while, we just had to work out a pricing model with them (it's a pay service). Michael closed a deal with them Friday, it will go up early next week."

I redacted the name of the service as a simple precaution. Who knows -- maybe the automated spam-bot isn't so automated and has a counter-assault ready. Don't want to give away precious Intel to the enemy.

Which leads me to wonder: Has even a SINGLE member of this community ever bought a fucking "ugg boot," let alone one from a spam-bot?!

Anyhow, let's see how this new pay service goes.

Also, do you all NON-admins have little blue and/or red flags in your menus of comment icons? Long ago, we instituted a scheme whereby if three users ticked off the "mark as spam" icon, the spammy comment would go away. I have these icons, but I'm an admin, and I can't immediately see if non-admins (still) have these flags as options.

I Jedi: Thanks for your thoughtful strategizing.

Being smart isnt your forte is it?

When the web site is slower than a snail on ice and the navigation buttons are MISSING completely, ill avoid it. What EXACTLY is so hard to understand about not visiting a web site thats chronically broken and spam trashed?

I wouldnt presume to know why something like PC World is even in your lexicon. You might consider performing a Google web search in order to determine the availability of other viable tech sites. I think youll find that there are plenty.

It must be a real bitch living in this world with absolutely no clue what so ever as to the free market that exists in the world of tech reviews.

Sup there Nimrod? Couldn't get any this morning? The ole lady piss ya off so bad you got your knickers on backwards? Your dog bite ya in the ass on the way out the door? When you get home tonight take to aspirin and soak your head for half an hour.

As ignorant as I may be, I have never had a problem with missing buttons or slow pages or links at this site. So I guess you must be over thinking the matter. There is, as I said, problems with the comments section as all are aware and reportedly working on. So you have to be doing something wrong. Your about the only one that has ever complained about speed or missing buttons.

Stop the personal attacks please.

I think we can all agree that the current way the comments are set up is bad, but there is no reason to attack each other. Hopefully Maximum PC fixes the problem soon.

Sorry, will remember to remain above such behavior in the future.

While I like MaxPC, I agree that the site is pretty much shitty from a design point. I, too, notice buttons that disappear, spam running rampant, and a cluster fuck of a front page. The articles are good, editors are nice, but I think this site needs a clean, simple makeover.
