It should be obvious, but a better comparison would have been the HP MediaSmart EX495 vs the DiskStation. The MediaSmart is currently $599 at newegg. Throw in another 1.5 TB Seagate drive for $80 and you've got as much storage as the DS for $220 less. The MediaSmart has a dual core pentium 2.5 GHZ processor and would be much faster at converting media. It would also be much faster than the Atom used in the Lenovo. When it comes to transfer speeds, I can easily max out my Gigabit network transferring files to and from my MediaSmart (100 MB/Sec).
For storage, the WHS holds 4 drives internally and 5 more can be added externally. The HP will also back up your MACs.
