What? A n00b challenge? Absolutely.

This is for Lunky if you are out there, lurking in the shadows and waiting for to amp up your folders at any moment just to see me scream "Foiled again!" You have passed me by once, let's see if you can stop me returning the favor;

I'll beat you to top 1000. (He beat me  )
I'll beat you to top 2000.

I am calling you out because I have nothing... er, well plenty of better things to do but this is fun and I am hoping it provokes you to amp it up to stave me off. (5k per day is not much, and you are capable of it).

The official challenge: (thejake490 vs. Lunky)
First to top 1000, with first to top 2000 as a benchmark.

Fold On!

By coincidence, I know Lunky. I don't know if he's out there either, Jake. He checks the MPC site, but I don't know if he peruses the folding forum. I'll see him at work tomorrow and I'll tell him about your challenge.

I got him curious about the folding after describing to him the machine I was putting together. It's killing him that I bought a GTX460 for no other purpose than to fold. He wants me to play Crysis on it at least once. Wait 'til he finds out I'm planning to buy a second 460.

You're such a wowzer, Ted!

And on the subject of Lunky... It appears that he has noticed my folding efforts and upped his own. once I get the Radeon HD 4670 AGP card put into my fileserver (for the sole reason of folding, as it is a Pentium 4 with only DDR memory), I should add another 1.2k PPD to my tallies and supplant him again more firmly. However, if I should find it justifiable, I will likely build another AM2 Sepmron and run a unicore client and another Radeon HD4650 PCI-E in addition to what I have, giving another solid 2.5+k PPD to the ranks of the Jake.

EDIT: Upon looking at the stats for me and Lunky, it is apparent that I will beat him to rank 2000 by the end of 5 days unless he increases his average points per day. (Even though he submitted more than me today).

Ah, if only I had an SR-2.....

TED!!! Stop drooling on me! Repeat these words: "It's just a motherboard, I don't need it..."

What am I wasting my breath for....

Jake, I forwarded a link to this thread to Lunky at work. As I suspected, he was unaware of your challenge. However, I think he's game judging from his reply to my email. Here's an excerpt:
Lunky wrote:
I know I have one old running barton core pc I can probably overclock and get a couple hundred points out of. I’m sure I have some parts units that can be frankensteined too…

So, piece together the best you've got and commence the Battle Royale!

OK! I shall pull out another dual core Athlon 64, some DDR2, and an HD4650 I have laying around and run it just for this.

Object of this lesson: IF YOU CAN FOLD, FOLD!

I'm just going to put these here to make it easier to watch the race.

So he'll beat me to rank 2000. I was setting up my other AM2 rig and it does not like the IDE optical drive while a SATA drive is present which was the trouble to begin with. It also does not like the PS/2 ports.

I recall now why it was put away.

However, not to worry... I will have it's 1600 PPD+ up and running in a day or two when my other SMP client finishes a WU and I can rob it of a SATA drive and a USB keyboard (and 4gb flash from work). Good benchmark though. And I bet Lunky is just dying to get back to his games. We'll see if he can hang in there long enough (about 45~57 days) to get to rank 1000 before me.

All in good fun, and nice to have a partner to provoke into folding marathons like this.

Congratulations to LUNKY for winning the race to rank 2000 this morning at the 3am update!
This is a nice run and I hope to continue to rank 1000 - and possibly get a few more machines
online so I can at least bet him to that mark. I should have enough time....

FOLD ON!

Got another Athlon x2 and three more pentium 4's up and folding. also my old HD 4650.
This is really addicting and fun... I may have something of a surprise for him later on too...

A SECRET FOR NOW.

That would be awesome. You have incurred more of my ebil temptations:

At least it's a pleasant thought.... even if it means selling your firstborn and getting a second mortgage on the house to buy a full SR-2 system... At least you'd be happy with 24 threads and 200k PPD+ (With GTX580's, who knows?), even if you are then living in your car with the cat, dog, parakeet and all manner of frustrated family members.

I daresay you'd also need air conditioning just for the beast itself.... Being winter, you may just get a dryer tube and pull the frigid air into the case directly....lmao

I've seen it done!!!

So apparently, me and Lunky have ourselves a contender!
I amped up my efforts a little bit more just recently and my
SMP is now giving me more points, but David Roe has appeared
late in the game:

I knew this would be interesting and fun, but now I'm even more
compelled to amp it up.

Fold On!

Hey Jake,

Lunky just got back to work yesterday from a vacation. He told me you're on his threat list now, along with David_Roe. That's a nice spike on your EOC chart yesterday! Looks like your getting things dialed in. Congrats!

It may be down to the wire for Top 1000. :D

Yeah, that was nice. unfortunately I have had a motherboard failure and now must upgrade and/or replace the motherboard to get functionality back so I must congratulate Lunky early on his win due to a fried circuit somewhere on the board - I have yet to isolate the problem except to rule out all the other components.

:( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Good luck to everyone else...I'll be back at it soon though and doubtless this is NOT the last challenge or gauntlet I shall take part in.

FOLD ON!

Edit: I replaced my motherboard, but am now unable to overclock which means I lost about 1k PPD which isn't much but at least I have the GPU client on the restored PC back up and running. Lunky will still likely win and would have anyway unless I can somehow get my hands on a GTX 460 or 480 between now and tomorrow evening.

CONGRATS LUNKY!!

Man, sucks to hear that. At least you're back in some capacity.

Nice stress test, this thing called folding, eh?

Well, I got that one back up and running circles - three clients: SMP (but limited to STD WU's :( ), a standard client, and the GPU2 client. Then one of my friends from work had me work on his rig: Phenom x4 960 2.2ghz, 9800GTX, 9600GSO.
SO...... My current PPD: 8769.97 (it was only 5698 before when I lost my SMP WU's because my motherboard is not designed for an overclock (and I happened to get an exact replacement from my pastor  , and I cannot chance an overclock on my friend's rig).

Considered just building Ubuntu rigs from all your old hardware? I'm sure you have a little laying around.

THEJAKE IS BACK... LOOK BEHIND YOU LUNKY. :p

EDIT: Erm.. I miscalculated my PPD with both the 9800 GTX and the 9600 GSO running at the same time.
My current PPD: 11,165.36 (I get to keep the 9600 GSO as payment for fixing my friend's PC, so now I just need to find a decent AM2+ motherboard that will support two x16 PCI-E cards at full bandwidth....)

I challenge you to keep up Lunky! Isn't this fun?

Just yesterday, I watched Zenyatta charge from the rear of the pack to barely be edged out of first place at the wire in the Breeder's Cup. This may be that exciting, too!
