Hello, I have written my outline for my COM 225 class on building a computer. I've built 5 in the last year so I figured I could give a decent informative speech on the topic. I have a solid outline and the main points are as follows; 1) determine use 2) Determine components based on the most taxing use 3) Put components together. I am keeping it very simple as it is a 7 min. speech, but I need to use three reputable sources. Most of my speech is based on personal experience. I have one source which is simply a statistic on the useful lifespan of home PCs from the IEEE's publication, but I am in a rut finding two more useful sources. Any ideas?

I gave a 7 min speech on how to upgrade RAM on a netbook and laptop. It isn't much time and I suggest revisiting your topic. I'm not sure how you could cover your main points in that amount of time. Especially if your audience isn't tech savvy. Google had a lot of results for "building a computer". It shouldn't be too hard to find sources. Here are some how to guides and M$'s system requirements. :D

What does your teacher mean by reputable sources?

I recommend printing off a list of sites from Google and ask if they are acceptable. When I did a speech on computer building for my public speaking course in college, we were not allowed Wikipedia and that was it.

Well she said .Edu's .Gov's, and some .Org's. But I showed her my topic and I ended up using this site along with a wired article lol. there really were'nt a lot of other options but the speech went well, I get a grade today. I can't believe some of the guys here at this school, one kid did a 10-min presentation on changing a diaper with very interesting visual aids...

i guess you could take a few things from here:
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/featur ... _step_step

http://www.buildeasypc.com/ - took a few minutes to read/skim thorugh

as far as reputable sources go, i learned in my recent library 101 (called intro to library skills - for students) course that it could be technical documentation, journal articles from databases, and encyclopedias - it also had to be dated within like 5 years to be considered "recent & decent", but building a computer documents have been around forever, so i would think anything would be okay

7 minutes is quite short. i think when i had to give a speech, mines was around 20 minutes - and that is much more than my comfort level allows

Honestly, that sounds more interesting and entertaining than listening to someone geek out about building a PC.

When I was in my communications class, I thought about giving a speech similar to the one you gave, then changed my mind- very few people are interested in building their own PC.

What I did instead, was a malware removal guide, and I brought in a CD for each student with the tools they'd need to do it. Most people have been affected by malware at some point, I even had a few students temm me in the following weeks I saved them a trip to the Geek squad or what have you. Something to consider for your next one.
