I have an HP Pavilion dv9408NR. Very nice laptop. Purchased for over a $1000 at best buy. It seems the motherboard went bad in a lot of these models. Mine did not go bad untill This month and out of warrenty. HP said 280$ and it would be good as new. They sent a box with FedEx next day shipping. It was at the repair station for only a day. (Must be a fast burn in??) I got it back in one weeks time. Trouble is, it's not my laptop. Even has the guys name in the battery space. Military because he has his unit also there. Now I wounder what else of his is on the hard drive? I called HP and got the AsianConnection. After 35 minites I was getting a little pressed for time. How many times do I have to repeat the information. They knew from the serial number that I had James' computer. I got disconnected and now they don't remember the conversation.

How about a little bite from the dog help?

My first question is whether the fine print in your warranty said that you'd get a refurbished model back, or your own.

Hmmm second hard drive in this computer. And it is fullllll.

The Owner is a Marine in the 3rd platoon @ Camp Pendleton CA

Do I keep digging to find this soldeir's batalion and company. And send him a note telling him that I have his personal information?

Do I wait and hope HP will correct this?

Should I post his name and hope one of his friends ID's this post?

I would much rather have this computer. Memory is maxed out. Second hard drive.

 I see. I can't advise on matters of conscience!

If it were me, though, I'd probably try to get it back to the owner, probably by contacting Camp Pendleton directly.

My son in law is stationed at Camp P. It would take little on my part to find this Marine.

I guess my question is. Do I go digging to find this guy. Or does HP stand up and fix their screwup? HP is saying what screwup? And I would have to dig a little in this Marine's laptop to narrow the search a little. And I really don't think I would like that if the shoe was on the other foot. Would you?

I sent a txt to my son in law with the name and platoon and camp.

I also found a place on HP's website to contact the CEO (ya right) and let him know about this screw up.

Let's see who fixes this screw up. I would have hpoped that HP would. How would you like to have your laptop in some stangers hands? After you trusted HP!

This same exact thing happened to me with eMachines quite a few years back. Except eMachines wanted me to contact the guy and ship the computer (which was broken) back to him at my expense....that didn't happen.

You need to let HP fix this problem, don't go randomly contacting people or they may think you stole it.

Keep calling HP.

he could have already gotten a replacement machine from HP already, and be in the same place you are, with someone elses machine or a refurb to replace his.

If he got mine he is pissed :) Less memory and one less hard drive. And the one that is there is blank.

Sorry but HP big time dropped the ball on this one. And should be called out for it. But there is no place that I know of that can do this. HP will do as they please.

I txt my son in law and gave hime what I know. I could go digging through the guys private files and find out who he is. But I don't like that idea. Leaves a bad taste. And I know I would not like some one going through my files and private pictures.

If I can not find him this way maybe best buy will help.

Have you filed a complaint with the BBB, FTC, and attorney general yet? If not, you need to do so ASAP.

Trust me, if you complain loud enough HP will listen. I have first hand experience with companies not listening and then having to force them to listen.

I was hoping the dog would take a bite out of this one.

The dog doesn't really exist anymore.

Your best bet would be to get this taken care of by making as much noise as possible. It worked for me at least  .

Sad. I loved that part of the mag. One of the first things I turned to and read.

Don't know what triggered it, but HP case management called. Said they would call me back today and let me know where my computer is. And they are going to send me a FedEx lable to ship James's computer back to them.

Bummer, his computer is much nicer than mine ;)

That was Monday and today is Wednesday. Nothin from HP. Bummer, I really thought that HP was going to fix this thing. It wouldn't be so bad except we paid over a 100$ to FedEx next day the computers. HP FexEx next day an empty box. I FedEx next day the box with my laptop inside. HP FedEx next day the laptop back to me. It took all of one week to get "a" laptop back to me and in working condiction. But it has no taken an extra week to bumble around trying to get my laptop back. My laptop had a "blank" hard drive when I sent it in. But like I said, James' hard 2nd drive is full of stuff.

Come on HP get your act together.

Friday I called the lady back that I had talked to on Monday. She was real sorry that she had so much on her plate that she forgot about James and I. She looked at James' records and said that he had called HP saying he had the wrong computer. She said she would get right on it. I told her my email address and told her to email me a shipping lable. That way I could get this laptop in the system before the weekend. You guessed it. Nothing from HP.

Sad just so sad they could keep dropping the ball on this.

I would call them back and ask them to mail you a shipping label. Take down their name and badge number as well.

Have you complained to the agencies I mentioned earlier in this thread? If not, I would recommend you do so because it seems that HP is trying to give you the run around.
