 Post subject: Why are MPGs renamed as "MPEG" in IE? Weird file s

Hi,

For awhile now I've had this problem - it's more of an annoyance, actually, but I'd like to get to the bottom of it. You see, what's been happening is that whenever I go to save a movie in IE, an MPEG movie , for example named:

catmovie.mpg

It ALWAYS renames it automatically so that the file is saved as:

catmovie.mpeg

Instead. Why is this, and can I fix this? It's just bugging me.

Well, you can just rename it mpg, but I don't have a real answer for you.

FYI, MPEG stands for Motion Pictures Expert Group
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mpeg

Just use the cli to rename the files.....

Code:
rename *.mpeg *.mpg

Try this in a seperate directory on some backup copies first.

Thanks a lot, the auto rename will help me with a lot of files.


But I'm wondering still why Internet Explorer is messing with MPG files from the net by adding that E in there! Other browsers don't seem to do it, so what in blazes is going on?

Hmm maybe it is just a universal thing. I don't really know why. Maybe they couldn't decide which file extension to use and somewhere in the line both got used but nobody cared enough?

Some things cannot be explained - IE is just that whack. ;)

I think its like .jpeg vs .jpg ... no difference really, just one less letter.

But no idea why it would change the file extension.
