I am going to upgrade my GPU to a DX 11 compatible one when the WoW expansion comes out. I was wondering if I can keep my current Nvidia 9800 GTX in my system to use it for physics effects only. I know that I will not get any graphical improvements but I would like to take advantage of any games that can use the physics processing power. Is this possible?

I am currently running:
Windows 7 Home 64
Motherboard XFX 790i Ultra
Intel 2.8 Quad Core
6G of Memory (2x1 and 2x2)
Video Card: BFG 9800 GTX regular not "+"

Thanks.

Yeah, you can use the 9800GTX for dedicated Physx.

I am actually thinking of getting an Nvidia 470 to take advantage of DX 11 effects.

You wouldn't be able to run the two in SLI though, but you can run them separately on the same motherboard assuming that your board can support multiple video cards.

Edit: Keep in mind as well that all of the GTX 400 cards support NVIDIA PhysX technology for physics rendering and will usually do a better job at it than the 9800

You think a single 460 that is handling physics and graphics will be better than a 460 that is only handling graphics and 9800 GTX that is only handling physics?

I may have to test it out.

I doubt it. The 9800GTX is plenty fast for PhysX calculations.

FYI I got this from Nvidia. It looks like I can do it.

Well yeah you can run both cards at the same time and use the 9800 for PhysX, but they will NOT run in SLI. To run in SLI you need 2 cards of the same GPU. Your setup would be the Multi-Card one from the page you linked.

This was what I was looking to do, one card for graphics and one card for physics. This set up is called multi-card not SLI. I didn't understand the definition of SLI.
