$15400?!?!?!
For a lot less than that, buy a Mac Pro (can't believe I'm saying this). Check out this config:

Summary
$8,988.00

Specifications

* Two 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
* 16GB (8x2GB)
* Mac Pro RAID Card
* 640GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
* 640GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
* 2TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
* 2TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
* 3x NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB
* One 18x SuperDrive
* Apple Magic Mouse
* Apple Wireless Keyboard (English) and User's Guide
* AppleCare Protection Plan for Mac Pro - Auto-enroll

Heck, for a little more coin, buy only one GT120, and then swap it out for 3 of the fastest Nvidia cards that Apple supports. You can also save $700 by not getting a RAID card.

I'm not a fan of Apple's bloated prices, but they were the first on the block with the dual quad-core machine. How many people would actually use 24 threads in the mainsteam? NONE!!!

Have you seen a Mac Edition GTX 480? If you have been then you should lay off the shrooms because it doesn't exist. Guess what? GTX 480s don't work properly in Macs, not even Mac Pros.

The absolute fastest video card you can buy is a single Mac Edition GTX 285 for a sickening $500. And yes, I said a single one. OS X does not support SLi as of this writing. The 3 GT120 top config in the Mac Pro actually has them run separately, meaning you need to have a program specifically designed to work with multiple unlinked cards to see any performance benefit.

Also, remember, the DM isn't about saving money. If it were about saving money... well... they'd look like last year's DM (which, by the way, still had more graphics horsepower than the fastest Mac Pro has).

Also, where's the SSD? A SandForce SSD is faster than any HDD RAID array, and much safer.

Meanwhile, the m11x has more gpu power than those gt 120's with unoptimized applications.

Yeah the last time I took a gander at the Mac site, about 8 months ago I think, that big multi proc Mac was hard and fast limited to like 300 or so watts total as in if you needed those 3 vid cards and then needed a raid card you had to pull one of the vid cards.

Just think what you could build PC wise with the same $8900.

Remove the SSDs, high-end video cards, triple monitors and watercooling and you end up with a PC that is cheaper than that Mac. Add a single video card that is faster than the GF120 (rofl) and you'll have a faster and more powerful machine than that Mac.

Well, sure, we can make anything into anything if we remove things, change things, and add things. And it only stands to reason that if you don't have as many things to buy, you will spend less. Since you have less to buy.

So, yeah. You've really very artfully shown your grasp of "Logic for Beginners".

The original poster's point was that for a lot less than the DM, he could build a Mac Pro.

My point was that a PC equivalent to the Mac Pro is about $2,000 cheaper.

Your point is that you're a troll who does nothing but criticise.

For someone who whines when I comment on his posts, you sure do love to attack me when I post in here. You're cool! I love having fans.

:thumbsup:

Well, I couldn't let this go without putting my two cents in. Personally, I couldn't stand owning a desktop that I didn't build myself. The Dream Machine has always been about creating something you can be proud of, and the PC platform is perfect for that because you have near-infinite combinations of parts at your disposal (as well as way better graphics than the Mac will ever have and the option to overclock). And it doesn't matter if they find a way to string 12 GTX 480s together in some sort of Quantum SLI, I'd still rather have a rig I built myself than one shipped from Jobs anyday.

It is hard to argue with the pride of building something yourself. :)
