So I'm learning Perl for my intro to programming class... I haven't touched it. Anyone have thoughts or tips for me?

Perl seems like a particularly bad choice for an intro programming language class. Do they offer other intro courses with something like Python, Java or C#? Heck, IMHO, even C seems like a GOOD choice compared to Perl.

What school is this at?

BYU Hawaii. I didn't know it was a "bad" choice but reading the syllabus for a previous semester it didn't seem so bad.... xD

Or a professor who is interested in teaching rather than making programming 'fun' .. reading that course description, I'd be worried about the quality of instruction.

... but I'm a pessimist. :P

Chances are that at a school that hires guys like that, finding one who isn't, will be hard.

I understand why he's teaching the Perl, he wrote the book that you use for the class. Sounds like a conflict of interest to me? I wonder what the rating for the book is? At least if you find an error in the book you can blame the teacher.

But what if he gets no benefit from us using the book?

It is not uncommon for a professor to use a book they've written as part of their course. After all, you wouldn't want someone like Russell or Norvig barred from teaching AI from their own book (or any professor being able to from any high-quality textbook).

If a textbook was particularly bad, you would hope that the people in charge of reviewing the course would notice and require the professor to use a different book.
