Maximum PC

Well, I got it to work, and its pretty cool.

Very quick even on that slow system. There are a few bugs I need to work out.

I need to get it set up completely, so its not running solely from RAM.

She cant play farmville currently, maybe doing a full install will fix that.

And just generally playing around with it and seeing how it works.
Its definitely cool.

I think its funny, I worked as a rep for another company at a computer store. And so many people came in just because there computers were slow or full of virus's and I think to myself now, "they didnt need a new computer, they just needed puppy " because all they did was basic stuff anyways.

Ubuntu, stripped down to the minimum required for her use.

So I have never done much with alt os's. Is this going to be fairly simple?

Am I going to strip it down post install or pre?

Unless you're creating your own loads, there's not much you can do pre-install

IMO, if the machine is running XP now, I'm not sure there's a lot you'd need to do after installing something like Ubuntu.

It does bear to ask exactly how she connects to the internet though as I'd really so some research if she's using dial-up and admittedly linmodems isn't exactly ground I'd be treading for someone new.

The install is pretty straightforward. Not sure how to strip it down, but it alwas ran smoothly on an old laptop with the original pentium m 1.6 ghz, 1.5 gb of ram, and a 32 mb mobility radeon 9600.

I wouldnt be going through this trouble but, the way she explains it, she had a copy of xp that could be used on multiple computers. Its on my step dads and working fine but on her computer, it comes up as not being legitimate windows and oufcourse she no longer has the disk.....

and the computer is running slow. So I thought this might be a good time to try something like this out.

It will probably run quicker than xp did and be more secure.

I don't remember any multi-copy licenses for XP but it has been quite a while. Regardless, Ubuntu should pick up and configure an eth-net based connection automatically. Firefox is installed by default, so her web browsing is covered.

How does she access her email? Is it web-based?

I installed it on my machine last night, VERY quick and responsive.

Yeah I saw firefox was pre installed. Does google chrome work as well on Ubuntu as firefox?

So admittedly, I am a complete nub about ALT OS's. Why do individuals use them?
