Hi, I've been wanting to try to overclock my cpu/video card. I'm new at this too. The problem is that I only have a 550 watt power supply. It's an Antec power supply, so its a good power supply. The components are an I5-750, a MSI RS5770 hawk and motherboard is a MSI CD-53. The ram is Gskill Ripjaw 1600.

Definitely.

Those high wattage requirements are for the people who buy the cheapo PSU's from second-rate manufacturers.

Just curious, how many watts does a computer use during operation? Maybe you could list wattage for a gaming computer, cheap store-bought computer, etc.

That depends entirely on the components. The number of drives, video cards and what kind of cards, etc. all have to be taken into account.

For the OP: I'm running a very similar system to yours and it is overclocked to 4.2GHz, running 24/7, with no issues at all.

My system:
    Core i5 - 750
    Asus p7p55d-e
    2x2GB GSkill Ripjaws
    2 HDD
    1 DVD+RW
    XFX 5770

The 550w should be plenty. I have an i7-920@3.3Ghz, 1 EVGA GTX 470, and 1 EVGA GTX 275 in my computer and when running all at 100% load for folding at home my computer was drawing in 550Watts according to my Kill-A-Watt.
