haha, thx guys for helping me out i've just one more question though. couldnt find it on the stanford site. so here it goes: after i download a work unit, do i still need to be connected to the Net for the PC to work on the unit? or do i need constant net connection before i can work on it again? thx!

Internet connection is only needed to download and upload WUs. The rest of the time all the magic happens in your PC.

As stated above, you only need the net for download and upload.

But the Graphic WUs only take a short time and therefore you need fairly constant access to run them.

SMP WUs take much longer to accomplish so need the net far less often.

Picked MPC up at the library a few years back, loved it, never looked back. Built my first PC a week ago... and ready to push it to its limits.

If you repost in the main forum, not this sticky, a lot more folks will see your post and welcome you to the team.

It appears you are doing single core WUs, you will likely get some input about the other clients and getting more results and points there also.

I just joined team MaximumPC #11108. Once I get my other computers up and running, I plan to run them all (10 cores collectively) almost all the time to contribute. Energy bills? I have budgeted it so I'm not worried. Besides, I work on computers all the time anyway so I may even get this okay'd to install on the workstations at my job (Another 4-7 cores depending on the day, but not 24/7). I've only been on the team for a couple of days, so I'm not surprised that I don't show up on any of the lists yet, but maybe once I have more than one core contributing to my scores (and 24/7), then I can watch the numbers grow.

I figure that a bigger energy bill is a small price to pay if it's going to an awesome cause - and really cool too.

We'll see...

Hey Jake......Post a "Hello Everybody" in the main forum with some info like your folding username(I couldn't find a Jake-something) and what kind of hardware you've got. You'll get a lot more people seeing that AND helping you out on maximizing your folding potential.

why hello there... My actual name is Michael Davis, and I have been a long time fan of Maximum PC both the magazine and the software. I am new-ish to using linux ubuntu, but a die-hard fan seeing as i had nothing but problems with windows, both vista and xp, of which it turns out that most of the issues may have been due to hackers, seeing as the first 24 hours of ubuntu I had over 300 attempts to hack into my computer.

I'm a geek by nature and I would like to donate my spare cycled to medical research as why would someone just waste there computers power if they are not using it??

but anyways, I have a core 2 quad and for some reason the smp folding client just would not work for me... it would work once in a blue moon, but the majority of the time it would not connect, so I'm now running 4 single threaded clients with different ID's. I hope that I'm able to help out, but so far i have spent 6 hours folding in each client and had little progress.

Tedster has made a Ubuntu Guide that you might want to peruse for some tips on getting your machine folding for more points depending on which version your running.

We've got many people who can give you some direct and specific help regarding whatever problems you may be having. When you do get the problems worked out we can help you maximize your folding potential. You'll likely get more responses to your queries if you post them on this forum which is simply the parent forum of this one.
