That's my main question, can Live Mesh and Dropbox co-exist? More specifically, can they both be monitoring the same folder(s) without ill effect?

Here's the background info for everyone screaming "Why in the hell would you want to do that??!!"

Have three portable machines that I need to keep certain files up to date. All were running Windows 7. Switched one over to Ubuntu 10.04 full-time. Thinking of dual-booting another. Dropbox has linux and windows clients. Live Mesh obviously does not. I want to keep the directories how they are under windows, Dropbox insists that everything goes under a Dropbox folder (yes, I know, there's workarounds). Also like the remote desktop capability of Live Mesh (i.e. I can connect to any of my computers, no matter where they are at, as long as they are online).

I figure I can setup a virtual machine running Windows. I'll setup Dropbox first, then point Live Mesh to the appropriate folders to sync. If it works correctly, then anything I update on a linux machine would be pushed via dropbox to the virtual machine, which will then push the changes out to Live Mesh (and vice-versa).

I think it would work, but I can foresee some potential issues. If anyone has tried it before, let me know!

Since no one else has tried, I figured I'd be the guinea pig. Here's the steps:

- Created Windows 7 Virtual Machine (using Proxmox-VE).

- Installed all necessary updates.

- Installed Dropbox. It created a directory named "Dropbox" under the Documents folder for my user.

- Installed Live Mesh.

- I then created the folders I wanted synced with Live Mesh under the Dropbox folder. Right-click, add to Live Mesh (something like that). It'll tell you the folder already exists, and asks if you want to sync. Say yes.

So far I've tested by opening a file on my linux computer, modifying it, then saving. I then went to my windows computer, opened it, and the changes were present.

Todo: Need to see if there's any problems with a dual-boot setup, i.e. Windows and Linux both on the same pc, syncing to the same folders, but using different sync software.
