So I have no idea how to use Ubuntu, or what to do with it once it's installed, but it's free and I need an OS to test out a computer and see if I managed to get it back to working. It used to have windows on it, but has since been completely wiped, and I think that's what causing me problems. I downloaded the install disc, direct from the site, and booted computer.

This is what happened.
BOOTMGR is missing.
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.

What do I do to fix this? I tried to use my windows 7 disc, but hit the same screen. Any help would be appreciated. Really want to get this computer back up lol. Thanks guys!

Yes. It was burned to a normal CD-R with the built in burner thing on Win7.

Did you remember to switch the BIOS to boot from the CD drive?

Yep. Set to boot from the drive. I also removed the hard drive from the boot list. Just tried it again and didn't work.

pop the disk in another PC and tell us what the contents of the CD are. Just a couple file names should suffice.

What kind of computer is this?

Oh the computer is an AMD *something* 3800+ I think. 320gb HDD, 8600 (?), and a GA-K8N-SLI mobo.

What exactly are you referring to? I don't understand the boot device thing. The DVD drive is named NEC DVD-RW I think.

Go under advanced bios features

First item there says "hard Disk boot priority" and below that it says first boot device. What is in that field?

Second option is bootable addin cards. Did I download the wrong version for the computer it something since Win7 reads the disc but not the other one?

The first boot device does not say WD2500JS-60NCB1 :) I'm more interested in what that says...not Hard Disk Boot Priority.

I'm thinking that is the name of the drive but the first part I put is CH3 M. Channel 3 master maybe? If so the what does that mean?

 apparently I misunderstood and feel dumb now so I look at the screen, first boot device is cd-rom and second and third boot device are disabled.

In the standard options, the dvd does show up in there right?

I'd probably load the fail safe defaults, go back to the advanced screen, set the first device to CD-Rom and try it again.

At thay point, I'd guess that either your drive is shot or you have a bad burn (have you tried to boot the disk elsewhere?) I suppose if you wanted to, you could put that livecd onto a USB key and then boot from that.

To clarify what that first section is, it's really just so you can set a different HD to boot to. Since

Ok guys thanks for all the help, but I just wanted to post a little something. Everything is up and running nice and neat, and my wife is currently stumbling thru Ubuntu. I had to download the alternate install disc, but worked and everything is quick and good. She really likes the extreme UI customizations she has already done, and I am learning new ways to work things, since this is my first foray into Linux. I am almost thinking of dual booting my main rig with it, just to play with it more, but I'll prolly wait for more hard drive hehehe, mine are pretty full already.Anyhows, rambling aside, thanks again! Cheers!
