I hate Internet Explorer. I never use it, and I want to remove it from my computer.

The problem is, I'm using Secunia PSI, which depends on IE to function. So I can't uninstall it.

My question: When a program wants to open IE, I instead want it to open an instance of Chrome/Firefox with IE Tab running. Is there any program or tweak that can do that?

Not exactly. I want to force programs that use IE to use Chrome/Firefox. Secunia PSI, for example, opens IE when downloading updated programs and such. Is there any way to redirect programs like these to Chrome/Firefox?

Then just set FF or Chrome to be the default browser

How does Secunia PSI interact with IE...just spawns a window to open a URL for an update?

I have Chrome as default.

And yes, basically that's what it does. For example, if PSI tells me a program is out-of-date, I click the 'download update' button and it links directly to the download. However, it opens up an IE download window. Also, if I want to update, say, Flash, PSI redirects me to the flash website, but in IE. PSI is coded to use IE for these tasks. I'm looking for a program that will make programs like this believe that they are opening and using IE, when they really are opening Chrome/FF in an IE Tab window.

I'm sorry if I'm being really complicated.

If you think it's coded, then there probably isn't much you can do as it's opening things by directly calling iexplore.with a URL flag. rather then just open a URL and let whatever default browser open it.

Since you're saying that you have chrome as a default, I would ask that when this happens, does IE prompt to become the default browser again or did you disable that setting in IE?

IE is too deeply rooted into windows to ditch it entirely. I know the situation you're facing, but I just work around it. If FF is my default browser and some application wants me to register the product (just an example), IE8 pops up to go to the page. It's so seldom that I haven't looked for a cure...but perhaps there is none besides editing the application's hooks individually.

Okay. I guess that's what happens when the OS maker makes the browser, too.

Thanks!

That's always been the debate with IE and Windows. This is why Microsoft has been in so much trouble in the mid-1990s with other companies like Netscape (not around anymore) and AOL. Because they had a monopoly on what web browser came with Windows... Funny thing is that IE is now being overtaken by Firefox by a hefty margin (according to many stats on the Internet).

But, sadly, you cannot remove IE, you can only "hide" it.
