Maximum PC

Hello everybody. I am a newcomer to this website and to the computer world in general. I am wanting to build my own pc for gaming and am pooling all my resources together. My question is, and I hope I don't sound stupid, linux? I looked it up on wikipedia, but I still don't understand what you can do with it. From the definition I was given in wikipedia, it reminded me of c++ and all i know about c++ is that it is for programming. Im pretty braindead when it comes to the interior workings of computers, but am willing to learn. I kind of feel like i'm playing catch up with computers because there is so much that I don't understand. Linux may not even be anything that i would be interested in, but it bothers me that I don't know what it is. Thanks

Linux is an operating system.

I think it's free too. It's easy to DL and try.

Most games belong in Windows but Virtual Machines are fun to play around with. VirtualBox and VMware are nice.

An easy way to start Linux is by installing Wubi. It installs/uninstalls just like a normal program in Windows and is very easy to set up. It also gives a brief introduction as to what Linux is.

Should give it a shot, nothing to lose.

Linux is a free open-source UNIX-like operating system. These days it can be a complete usable package and distributions include Open Office (an Office suite of tools), etc.

If you are going to load Linux IMHO Fedora and Ubuntu are good distros to try. If you are new to computers I suggest you try loading Linux on a spare computer to avoid the confusion of multiple OS's on one computer.

If you just want to try it and see what it looks like try Knoppix. Download and burn a Knoppix disc. When you boot from that disc it will create a RAM disk and decompress Linux into the RAM disk. Then you can try it out. Do note that although you're not running your Windows OS Knoppix can see the hard disk so if you tell it to do things to it, it will.
