I managed to get a Toshiba T1200 laptop - one of the first true laptops produced - working with a fresh install of MS-DOS 6.22 and even Windows 2.03! This lappy works just as well as it did in 1988 (pause for laughter).

As I love puttering around with old equipment, I'm actually curious if I can get the internal 2400 baud modem operating and perhaps connect an IRC or Telnet client to the Internet. But believe it or not, I've never messed around with networking in DOS other than some always-enjoyable encounters with InterLnk.

So I need some old school help from you veterans who've done this before: how do you dial and connect a modem in DOS? I've searched around the 'net for two days and mostly come across articles explaining how to do it in Windows XP.

I'm familiar with init strings and how they operate, but entering the strings at the prompt just produces "bad command or file name" trash. Surely I'm missing something, but I don't even know what. Packet driver? Bag of voodoo dust? Swear jar (thinking ahead)?

Help! I want to be prepared because if Armageddon happens and all the modern computers are destroyed, I still want to ensure I can contact someone in Denmark regarding Dungeons & Dragons strategies.

you need a DOS terminal program.

here is one, never ran it its just the 1st one google hit that looks OK.

run it, play with baud rate, port and start/stop bits, after that its AT commands.

back in the day I used Robocomm for BBS stuff (mainly QWK packet mail with Robomail).

do yourself a favor, dont run a windows less than 3.1, and 3.3 is the best most stable of them all. i have used all of them from 1.0 on and 1 and 2 all sucked.

what does the computer use for input, cd or 3 1/2" disks. i think your biggest problem will be support, not many places support back beyond win 95.

No way a 1988 lappy has a CD drive.
