Has anyone picked up one of these?

I'm looking to invest in a seriously beefy laptop that I'd keep for 3-4 years. I'm not looking to play the bleeding edge games, but the screen would be 1920x1200 and I currently play Second Life mostly. However, I want to get into Star Trek Online and one or two future games. I don't play shooters, so that's not a big deal.

OS would be Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I'd be blowing off their install and doing a clean one myself.

I'm looking at the Core i7 620M because of its lower power consumption than the slightly older 720-920QMs, and I'm not sure quad-core is a huge requirement for the things I do.

Will dual Mobility 4870s keep me happy for a few years of large screen gaming? Or should I hope that Alienware throws some newer cards in there soon?

Thanks.

I just purchased the M15x, and I also looked at the M17x. For whatever reason, on the newest models, the highest screen res option is only 1400 x 900. This is less than the resolution on the smaller 15 inch notebook. Just something to consider.

Also, I'm not too familiar with these cards, but I'd check out a notebook from asus or sager or someone with the 5870 in it. It's the new kid on the block, and will probably provide the best performance without having to worry about the sometimes finicky 2 card solutions.

If you're looking to buy a really fast 17" laptop, you should look at an Asus G73JH. It's got a Radeon HD 5870 in it, which is as fast as dual 4870s but uses less power and supports DirectX 11. It's also got a Core i7, and the best part is it starts at $1550:

Actually, I've been regularly customizing a build of the m17x and for a couple of months now there has always been a 1920x1200 LED screen option, so I'm not sure why you're only seeing a 1440x900.

And yes, I was looking at the Asus G73JH, and from XoticPC, but right now I get 12 months of no interest financing from Dell, which is a big factor. Tricking out the Asus with the available options puts it just over $2K, and XoticPC doesn't offer the 620M, which Asus says is one of the options available.

I'm still looking around. The Alienwares are obviously too pricey, but there appears to be no way to reasonably finance the Asus. Good thing that right now I'm just in the market and don't have to buy.

Sorry about that, it appears the option is back now. I even talked with dell and they claimed that it wasn't an option... that ticks me off cause I might have ordered that one instead.. grr. Hopefully you have better luck than me!
