Maximum PC

recently my main desktop died, and I have been forced to you my linux laptop as my main computer. so this is the first time I have used linux extensively

as for my first question, is there a keyboard command in Ubuntu similar to Ctrl-shift-esc (and ctrl-atl-delete) where you can bring up a task manager type program. I have been at a loss what to do when my computer locks up so I have been forced to restart.

for my second question, is there an in depth hardware info program similar to CPUZ that I can use?

Gnome System monitor You could probably program the key sequence you're talking about via the keyboard shortcuts applet (another Gnome tool)



Not sure what to tell you here as I'm uncertain if you can find all you need in one package. I know gnome panels has a CPU frequency scaling monitor you can add (right click somewhere on your task bar and select add), but it sounds like you want more.

I'd think somewhere like gnome-look.org would have a decent desklet to use for that. If not there, gnomefiles.org would probably have something.

hmm I tried exec gnome-system-monitor. and while that worked in the terminal it failed when I tried binding it to a keyboard shortcut.

do you have any suggestions?

I just run the plain binary without exec

Perhaps the esc key may be causing some issue here.

thanks, that worked. I took off exec and it worked fine. for some reason I thought I needed a command first

now I only need to see if this will work when my system locks up

Gailim, try to use the "ctrl" + "esc" keyboard combo when it locks up, that usually unfreezes a system lockup, and it works in Linux, Mac, and Windows. (note: the Apple logo key replaces the "ctrl" key in a Mac.)

dude...try not to drum up old theads...this thing is close to 3 months old.
