Overclocking has been a hobby of mine for a very long time. These days I do not have the money to push hardware until it breaks, so I am conservative.

Video card: HD 4890, 975 core, 1200 memory at 1.3625 volts, reference cooler.

[Note: Motherboard early revision 1.0 Gigabyte P35-DS3R]

CPU: Intel E8600, highest stable overclock = 4.5GHz and remain under 70 degrees C when 100% load [using an old XP90 Thermalright cooler pulled from a socket 478 motherboard]. I felt most comfortable running the CPU at 4.2GHz where it stayed in the 50s centigrade under load.

When Overclocking I want my system to last, so, I make sure I am using a safe voltage and temperatures for longevity.

My motherboard is now just over 3 years old and still ticking.

If Intel releases a 32nm quad core that is highly overclockable, I might have to upgrade my system...

Kind of an oldie but in trying to squeeze the last drops out of my sister's Latitude D610 with a new hard drive and Windows 7, I also picked up a 1.8Ghz Pentium M 745 @ 400Mhz FSB and pinmodded it to 2.4Ghz @ 533Mhz FSB. Rocksteady at 1.276v where stock is 1.340; apparently I got a winner because other accounts of the same mod say a bit more voltage than stock was necessary. Because of that I also voltmodded it to 1.404 which took away the ability to set voltages via software between and including 1.212 and 1.260. At the next lower voltage, 1.196, it immediately BSOD's.

It's not noticeably much peppier under normal conditions but does get pegged at 100% during heavy use less often. It's having some temperature issues though. At full speed, it idles in the mid 40s to low 50s which isn't too much of an issue as Speedstep is enabled, but it will reach 80 during OCCT before throttling kicks in. I'll have to see where reapplying paste gets me when I get a chance and I'll probably un-voltmod it while I'm in there to get as low a voltage as possible.

Way back in the Ancient of Days (about 4 years ago, I'll say), I had an old AMD K6-2 300mhz that wouldn't run Half Life with an old 64mb nVidia MX-400. So I whipped out my trusty little floppy drive (I can hear the groans already) and updated the SiS 530 MOBO BIOS so that I could experiment a little.

I got the thing to run at 500mhz without a hitch, all said and done. The most nerve-wracking thing about it was watching the little cursor blink on the bios updating screen and praying to God I didn't lose power! Don't ask what the temp was under load, I never found out and wouldn't be surprised to find out that I was just a few cycles short of a full and spectacular CPU meltdown. (Which would almost have been as exciting as actually PLAYING Half Life....).

No overvolting was needed. This snapshot was taken after a stint on Heavy Load (16 hours) It gets the job done, no frills. Could'nt validate because I keep it off the net so as to avoid viruses...its just for lan parties and fragging sessions.

As a late update: I ran Prime95 for 8 hours solid on my Phenom x4 9850 BE system and it never got unstable, nor did it's core temps reach anything over 62°c. (And when I stopped it, my Hyper 212 cooled the proc back down to 43°c in no time.... awesome part. I strongly recommend it to even those who just want their proc's to last WITHOUT o/c'ing them).

Very nice, NoCtrl. For some reason, CPU-Z will only say my proc is getting a 6.25 multiplier when I am actually using a 15.5 multiplier. But then it also says that my mobo revision is x.xx. Here is the old dump that was not validated.


Bumped my Phenom x4 up to 3.1ghz which is not much, but as high as it will safely go (it was enough to change my TPF to 39 minutes from 41 minutes though ).

Both will overclock higher, but become unstable under my cocktail of Prime95 and Heavy-Load even in short runs. The Phenom will not go higher stably regardless of settings and there are no examples of any higher clocked 9850's out there which were stable under load. The Pentium 4 will clock higher, but not above 3.5ghz with stability. The Phenom runs at 50c max under load, while the Pentium will see 38c under load.
