This is an interesting topic. Does it go in the Roadwarrior section? Is it a laptop? Multimedia? Who knows .. Apple is messing with my head.

The iPad is Apple's new tablet and it looks ... almost ... great. Basically, it looks like my iPhone on steroids.

The good:
    Fast enough for FPS gaming
    Brilliant and beautiful screen
Full App Store support and native integration of all current iPhone apps
10 hours of battery time and 30 days of idle standby.
0.5 inches thin, 1.5 lbs, 9.7" IPS screen
    Wifi, bluetooth, compass, accelerometer, etc.etc.

The bad:
    No multitasking? Seriously?
Apple 1GHz A4 Processor? Wtf is that?
8 - 32GB of flash storage ... and that's it? No support for removable storage?

The horrible:
I'll probably have one by the end of the month.

so if it has support for the IPhone apps, it's a large IPhone that plays games?

then it would not come with the contract fees, right?

No contract fees .. no 3G or cell connection. You could use bluetooth to share your iPhone (or other 3G device) 'net connection with it, though.

It is a netbook / tablet ... not a cell phone.

They've even created a version of iWorks for it .. so it is intended to be much more than a phone.

Until I see multitasking, though, I don't see how it can compete. Other than on pure sex appeal which, frankly, is selling me right now.

No way this thing is going to be cheaper then a netbook... chances are I'm still going to be sticking to an M11x. I'd much rather have a real keyboard and a faster hardware set then a sexy tablet.

Given what I use my netbook for, I don't think a keyboard is necessary except at home ... where you can use bluetooth to connect KB and mouse.

It depends on your intended use, of course. And cost.

Hold the phone! Apparently, they will be selling models with 3G and without. Nice. $15/mnth for 250MB of data and $30 for unlimited. No contract .. prepaid subscriptions per month.

$30 a month for unlimited 3G is impressive pricing.

Especially when you consider that there is no contract involved. NO CONTRACT. Wow.

Pricing:
    wifi only: $499 (16GB) -- $599 (32GB) -- $699 (64GB)
    wifi + 3G: $629 (16GB) -- $729 (32GB) -- $829 (64GB)

It's not cheaper then a netbook.
but that's not bad pricing at all. Too bad 3G bumps initial pricing up so much.
Yep, still going to get an M11x.

There was no way this was ever going to be cheaper than a netbook. Ignoring for a moment that it is an Apple product, a touchscreen alone immediately pushes it out of the netbook range. Add the glowing Apple and I'd have put it in the $800+ range.

Will's guess was much closer than mine .. he nailed it right on, actually.

The prices are really good .. except for the lack of multitasking. I'll have to think before I buy .. and since they won't ship for another 60 days, that'll be easy to do.

More Apple garbage that is over priced and pointless.

I will admit the iPhone is a cool concept and if Verizon gets one, I will likely be getting one (integrates with my new dvd/nav system in the truck). However the Droid is pretty pimp and having played with it, it is lightning fast!

That said...

you are paying $200 more for a less capable netbook. The only awesome thing is the 3G portion, but seriously... I can get a 3G connection for my laptop with an add-in card (has 3 wireless card slots!).

The no contract thing is nice though...

Ultimately useless and fanboys have e-hardons for it. It has little practical use in its price point. Sorry Jip, the iPhone I understand... the iPad (aside from sounding like a chic new way to control your woman's monthly flow) is super retarded.

No. It is definitely not a laptop replacement.

I'm not even sure it is a netbook replacement.

It is ... something ... new.

Something good? I haven't decided.

I know there is a rule against this but, +eleventy billion!1!!!!!111!!1!!

Those are some serious flaws for a device that doesn't fit in my pocket.

I don't like that it does not support multitasking but if the interface is done right it may be OK. That thing is super sexy but I have not seen enough to want to buy one yet.

Why would you expect a camera or GPS on a device that doesn't fit in your pocket?

Lack of flash .. I'll be shocked if that isn't addressed by launch. The iPhone has it .. they run the same apps .. and Apple knows that it is necessary for an ideal (or even average) web experience.

Stylus / handwriting .. meh .. I haven't written anything longer than a note to my gf or signing cheques since I left school. Not important to me.

No SD card. Yeah ... that sucks balls.

There is 3.5mm headphone jack. Not sure where you got that idea, Maxx.

As for .mkv ... well, lacking one container format isn't going to kill me. I haven't even seen mkv since I stopped watching anime.

Why should I *not* expect it?

I have GPS and a Camera on my phone. it is a phone. It fits in my pocket. They have room for it in the iPad cuz they have it in the iPhone. It isn't a huge chip for either feature.

Front facing camera for Skype or Google Talk. GPS because with unlimited 3G data, google earth/maps based navigation with a large high res screen would be nothing short of fucking awesome.

Despite owning one, Flash on the iPhone is news to me... Please, where can I download it? Safari won't let me install the Adobe plugin.

All tablets have it, and it's not just for writing, it's awesome for drawing, designing...

Every HD TV show and movie I download (I don't watch realtime TV anymore) is MKV encapsulated H.264, which represents about 150~300GB a month for me. It would be really nice if I could transfer those files to this device like I can with my notebook and tablet PC.
