So I was surfing the MaxPC forum on FireFox- these were the tabs I had open in FF:
MaximumPC forums
Maximumpc homepage
most recent Maximumpc freeware files story
The tab for eXpresso that you guys linked to.
-THE FOLLOWING WAS NOT PROMPTED BY ANYTHING I CLICKED ON-
FireFox wasn't even the top window when it happened:

something on one of these tabs redirected me to the fake Antivir AV site which proceeded to do a phony system scan and tried to prompt me to download a virus.
I'm pretty darn sure my PC is clean, or at least was before that. Scanning my system for viruses now just in case. Just letting you guys know... I've never had this happen before on a trusted site like this.
EDIT: repositioned some text for clarity.

So I'm not the only one.

This happened to me too.

Anyone remember what site it was on (like Forums, maximumpc.com, some other domain)?

I tried the steps Spartacus laid out, but didn't happen. Of course I'm running ABP (just filtered so it doesn't block MPC).

I think I was on MPC's main site and not the forums when this happened to me.

It's only happened the one time so far.

I laid out the tabs I had opened- it opened a new tab so I'm not sure which tab redirected me to the site.
and yes, it only happened once to me too.

I realize I'm bringing back a dead topic, but it is with pertinent information. It happened again. This time, though, the only tab I had open was the maximum PC forums, and it redirected me to thebestpharmacypill.[LINK BROKEN]com
Not only had I done a very thorough bug sweep just a couple days ago (and then only had a few tracking cookies), but after it happened again, I checked and swept my PC, and again found nothing. So I really doubt it's me. What's going on?

Interesting.

I had the same problem when I clicked into this thread. So it's not just you.

It happened to me a moment ago and I didn't notice the pop up. I inadvertantly accepted the download and now I have a crippled work machine with the Antivirus Live virus on it.

THANKS MAXIMUMPC

Oh, and FUCK YOU.

Happened to me in the breakroom. I will send my bill to Will.

Happened to me last night as well. I was in the comments area of one of the reviews on the main site. Norton 360 went ape shit about it too and stopped me from accepting it.

I tried emailing Will but, kept getting kicked back emails and I never did get one through to him.

I e-mailed him when I first got it, so he knows about it.

Hopefully he gets the shitty ad removed.

Pop-up happened again as I logged into the forum and redirected to the virus site. This time I was able to catch it thank god.

Would have been pissed to wreak the same machine two days in a row. lol

I know that I'm far from being any kind of software expert. Hell you guys know it to. So I have a question on this subject.

I read this Article and dnld'd the program just for giggles.

MPC Article Firefox Add-on of the Week; Ghostery

I then went to a whole bunch of sites that I go to often. for instance a bunch of tech sites like Anand Tech, some shopping sites (Amazon/Newegg/NCIXUS etc) and found that MPC has no less than 6 or 8 critters running free on their site. Could any of them be the culprit here?

I notice that all the other sites I tried it out on only had Google Analitics and maybe one other crawling arround.

I downloaded the add-on and came up with 7. They all look legitimate.
