Here's what I want to accomplish. I'm thinking of building a cheap, low power, low cost computer that I can keep track of parts I have on hand for repairing tools. Some of the crap I've ordered I forget that I have and end up ordering more! I have tons of new parts in storage containers labeled according to manufacturer name, but that's the extent of my organizing. It's worked to this point but would like to take it to the next level. This computer will be for nothing else except that. No internet, nothing. Here's the catch, I need the OS to be open source in that there's no license needed, or money to be spent. I was thinking Ubuntu. (I have 8.04 but am aware of newer versions and am able to download and burn) Do you guys have any suggestions on a database program? I would basically like to keep track of names and part numbers is all. Again, I would like for it to be free as well.

thanks in advance for any help :)

openoffice

has a spreadsheet and database. I mention the spreadsheet because that might be easier than a full blown database for the inventory.

thanks for the reply! I've played a little bit with OpenOffice before and have liked it so now I'll have to download a Linux version.

With Ubuntu (which you mention you're looking at), most of OpenOffice is already there by default.

Thanks! I downloaded Ubuntu 9.10 today so that's perfect.

just an update, got a small computer together and have Ubuntu installed. Man what a gorgeous program! Too bad I'm a gamer or Windows would be out on it's ear!

Anyway, I've been fiddling around with OpenOffice Base and I think I have a method down that will work for me. Thanks for all the help and suggestions!

and man is Ubuntu neat! 8)
