By the direction of Defiant, I bring you my Wooden Computer Case Build!

I'm a recent graduate of Georgian College and I now have a certificate in Cabinet Making (I need to do 4 years of apprenticeship before I get my ticket). I've decided to build a wooden computer case out of mahogany in my spare time.

I've created a work log which can be found here, complete with a lot of pictures:

http://cammorrison.wordpress.com

I encourage anyone to take a look, read, comment, and get involved. I'm rather excited about this project and I hope that I might be able to even inspire someone else.

I post pretty regular updates, I'm hoping every day or two (excluding weekends) and I have a lot of grainy Blackberry Bold pictures for your viewing pleasure.

Post in this thread, or comment on the blog itself if you like. I'd like to hear some feedback or suggestions. I'm hoping to have this 90% finished within the next week or so (I work pretty quickly). Ask any questions you want here so that I can reply. It's my first build of this size or complexity and although I've drawn up plans, I'm making a lot of decisions on the fly. Check out all the pages on the blog for answers to some questions.

If you like what you see, tell your friends!

Take care,

-Cam

Just posting to let you all know that I've posted a few more times on the blog and it's coming along nicely.

I went out and bought some hinges today for the case, and I'll be making another post either later tonight or tomorrow afternoon to show you all the mains structure is glued up finally.

http://cammorrison.wordpress.com is the site, enjoy, and discuss!

Thanks man. =)

I wish I had the time and tools to do some more work on this thing. I'm hoping to be working on it again by the end of September, with some more updates on the blog.

The cases on that site look intense, but that's way too much money for me to even consider haha.

Okay, it's been a long time since I updated the build log, but I've finally got my stuff together and I'm working on the case again.

Check out days 14-19 here in my new entry, and expect some more updates this week; I'm hoping two posts will be made.

It's starting to look a lot more like a computer case.

Comments are always welcome!

Sorry for the double post, but I kind of wanted to bump the topic.

Sorry for the triple post, but I figure a month and a half is okay to bump a work in progress topic. If this isn't the case, just tell me and I won't bump the thread anymore.

I put up another post today; I'm getting back into the swing of things while I can, since the Canadian winter is going to set in within 3 weeks.

Day 23 permalink.

EDIT:

Here's Day 26.

Wow!

It looks great!

Most people just give up on these things after a couple of weeks, good job persevering!

Thanks man!

There was a time back in September to mid-October when I had so much else to do that the build kind of got placed on the back burner, but now that I've made so much progress and gotten so close to the end there's no way I'd stop now.

Looks Great!

Any idea on how much it's going to weigh?

The only heavy part is the top; overall I'm guessing at 19lbs empty, which is pretty good for a case of this size.

I'll definitely be weighing it with a scale once it's all done though.

Looks good. My favorite pieces are the fan guards and the drive bay doors.

As far as case fans go, did you try newegg.ca? Just go to the case fan section and use advanced search and you can narrow your options down by any option you can think of.

Looking forward to seeing this thing up and running.

Thanks man.

I actually got some help from the other forum but then I went looking on my own at NCIX and found these, and these.

For $8, and specs like that (and reviews to back them up), I don't think I can go wrong.

Plus, they're Scythes, and I've never had a problem with Scythe fans!

Here's a few instant gratification pictures for anyone who is just reading this for the first time.

It's almost done; the components are in and wired up, but an LED broke so I'm going to fix that before I post the finished pictures.

In the meantime, a video tour is coming soon!

Here are the video tours of the case that I've done so far with a crappy camera. I may decide to re-shoot a video in 720p, but I'm not certain that I can secure a camera for that.

Tour 1.

Tour 2.
