I am looking for FREE video desktop capturing software to capture my desktop in video (e.g. I want to be able to capture a region, window frame and show mouse movements etc. like you see on youtube).

I have tried a few programs but each one seems to have a downfall (for instance, not letting me choose which directories to use, or not allowing me to specify they video format etc.).

So I was hoping that the knowledgeable MPC readers would know of the BEST free software out there. Please let me know if you have a suggestion and thanks for your time.

I have been using Cam Studio which is free:

http://camstudio.org/

You are limited to .avi files but I have converted the .avi to other file types without a problem. It also will produce .swf (Flash) files which is nice. It offers a variety of quality (file size) and audio input options. Considering it is free it did pretty well.

Additionally rather than Free Clinic I think this will fare better in a Multi Media section.

Thanks for the reply and for moving the thread to the right place.

I did find Cam Studio and it works well as a recorder. I do not mind .avi files since they are easily edited. The one limitation I do not like about Cam Studio is I cannot find a way to change the directory for which the final recorded video is stored. It allows me to change where the "temp" file is placed but I have not found how to change where the final capture is stored. Is my only option to place the software in the directory I want the videos to be stored???

If you have an idea as to whether or not the file directory can be changed please let me know and thanks again for the reply.

And if anyone else knows of other software I should try please let me know.

Interesting. I just recently used it and when I was done recording it prompts me with a standard Save dialog box offering me where to save the finished file. I just created a folder in my videos folder (Vista) and have been shoving the things in there. It's not something I use very often but it did what I needed the few times I have used it.

Maybe someone else who does more of this stuff will have some thoughts or suggestions.

Hey, if you google it, you can definitely (note that it is spelled correctly) get many video capture softwares. But the quality of recorded videos varies and it's annoying to see the logo or the video parse in case of slow Internet speed. personally, I l'd like to use the screen recorder can help me record what happened on my desktop and save as standard AVI or WMV format files, so that I can upload to some website. I usually use it to capture web camera video when I was making video calls with my fellows.

Please do not bring old threads back to life. When a thread is over 30 days old we like to just let them die.

Thanks
Ron
