Hi, this will be my first build and i admit im a bit nervous as to how it will all play out. Basically im looking for a moderate gaming PC, and i will also be streaming movies, and using programs like photoshop, office, illustrator, synergy, as well as some DVD burning. So basically heres what im looking at so far:

MOTHERBOARD
- Asus P7P55D EVO - LGA 1156
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=5083578&sku=A455-2912&srkey=Asus%20P7P55D%20EVO
CPU
- Intel Core i7 860, 2.80 Ghz - LGA 1156
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4959972&csid=ITD&body=MAIN#detailspecs
RAM
- (2) Corsair Dominator DHX 4GB DDR3, dual channel, 1600mHz
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4837612&csid=ITD&body=MAIN#detailspecs
Video Card
- XFX Radeon HD 5770 - 1Gb DDR5
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=5316156&sku=P450-5770&srkey=xfx%20radeon%20hd%205770
CASE
- NZXT Tempest
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3911521&CatId=1842
PSU
- Corsair TX750W - 140 mm fan
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3438609&pagenumber=1&RSort=1&csid=ITD&recordsPerPage=5&body=#ReviewStart
HARD DRIVE
- Seagate Barracuda 1 TB 7200 rpm, 32mb, SATA3G
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=4691122&sku=TSD-1000AS3&srkey=seagate%20st31000528as
OPTICAL DRIVE
- SAMSUNG SH-S223C
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5344784&CatId=1624

OTHERS
thermal grease?
hard drive SATA cables? mounting screws? (hard drive is OEM)

so my budget is 1500 right now, and i shouldnt need to have any of these parts shipped (near many computer parts stores). Right now this build is at about 1300. However, i will be getting a netbook/small laptop as well with a total budget of 2000.

Here are my questions/concerns:

1- Ive been reading up on the i7 860 vs the i7 920, and since i will most likely not be overclocking (maybe down the road) the 860 has similar, if not better benchmarks than the 920, so i decided to go with it. I still have the 920 in the back of my mind though.

2- should i save money and go with 1 set of the memory? will 4GB be enough/sufficient?

3- I have also been reading on the radeon 5770 vs the 4890, and opted for the 5770 because of the future directx11 support and lower running temp and power. However, there is also a bit more room in my budget for something more powerful. I wont be doing real hardcore gaming, but would like to see some good framerates when i do.

4- 750w should be enough right?

5- What will i need to assemble this project. ie what will not be included in the parts when i get them.
- things like thermal grease(or will the CPU already have it) mounting screws, cables)
- as well as tools. should i buy a specialized kit with an antistatic bracelet, even though i dont plan on doing future builds for a while? or will normal screwdrivers etc be enough.

Thanks for any input!

Very Happy[/url]

first, please link the the parts you are considering

now for your questions

1. stick with the 860 (though I think the 750 would be better). the 920 requires a more expensive mobo

2. 4GB (2GBx2GB) is enough for just about anything today. if you need more later than buy more later. buying lots of ram now makes little sense because by the time you need that ram it will be much cheaper

3. I think you could probably swing a 5850 by tweaking the rest of your build (more on that in a sec)

4. extreme overkill

5. if you intend to use the stock cooler, it already comes with paste pre-applied. if you want to use an aftermarket heatsink then you will need your own paste. one phillps head screwdriver is all you really need. you can get the bracelet if your paranoid, but I have never needed it. just don't build on carpet and ground yourself before starting

if you link to the parts you are considering I can tweak your build to save money in various places for little to no performance loss. then you might be able to get that 5850. which reminds me, you never said what resolution you were playing at. could you fill us in? that has a big impact on what card is best for you.

thanks for the reply,

would you say 500 or 600 watt psu instead?
- good point about the ram, and i think thats what i will do, although i do have one question:
is ram interchangeable? if i were to stick with the 4gb now, then opt for more late,r would i have to get the same ram, or could i get a different brand/model?

also, does the 5850 boast a significant increase in performance over the 5770?

depends on what GPU you decide on. for a 5770 you can go with a quality 400W unit. for the 5850 a quality 500W unit will do

no you can use any DDR3, though it would be best to get the same speed/latency.

hoo boy does it ever Laughing

but once again, that depends on whether you need that kind of power. what resolution do you play at?

ok after looking at your parts we can shave tons off that build (some of that has to do with your part selections, some with the fact that TD is overpriced)

as for your resolution, at 1280x1024 even a 5770 would be overkill. I'm gonna go ahead and list a monitor as well since I was able to save so much

also, 5850's are hard to come by in stock but it is worth it to wait

here is what I would do

yes, i will have to find a canadian alternative to these but that shouldnt be too hard. newegg.ca usually has a price increase compared to the american site, but thats not much of an issue
