|
|
Dell Inspiron 5100 Laptop, XPpro
Long story short, I'm infected with Personal Guard. I've got the classic symptoms; [the fake] Windows Security Center pops up saying Personal Guard is not activated click here to activate, I've got a Personal Guard icon on the desktop and one in the sys tray. Google searches say Malware Bytes will remove it, so I installed it but at the end of the install wizard when it asks if you want to update and launch MWB, I clicked YES and got an error saying the .exe could not be found. It looks like it did not install correctly (I'm guessing Personal Guard may be hosing its install somehow).
So I ran SuperAntiSpyware (which was already installed on my machine), let it do a Complete Scan. After reviewing the threats that SAS found I could see it identified Personal Guard (yaye!), clicked the NEXT button to delete the entries and as it deleted entries I could see the Personal Guard icon being deleted, then SAS said I need to reboot to finish the clean-up process.
Rebooted and Personal guard is back; icon, system tray and fake windows security center. Add to that I have a RUNDLL error which says:
Error loading c:\windows\system32\jifeviyo.dll
The specified module could not be found
I have not tried running SAS in safe mode because I thought I'd stop in and see what advice I could get first.
Here's my HijackThis log, I can see some cooties already but take a look and tell me how I should go about this (...and thanks in advance for your help!):

UPDATE:
Tried booting into Safe Mode (twice) and got a BSOD. Boots into Windows normally though, ...for now |

Some things need to be deleted.
Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.
Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
- Save it to your desktop.
- Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
- Select:
- Delete on Reboot
- then Click on the All Files button.
- Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):
c:\windows\regred.exe
c:\windows\usexplorer.exe
c:\windows\certsystem.exe
c:\windows\securits.com
c:\windows\spoov.exe
- Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
- Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.
If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.
Let me know if you get any errors or prompts on reboot
Please also re-run SUPERAntiSpyware and pots the logfile here when done. If you can't find the logfile, let me know. |

I tried running Killbox but it would not let me paste from clipboard the list of file paths. If I tried to delete them individually I got that Pending FileRenameOperations prompt, and would not reboot.
Prior to going to bed last night I was able to install MalwareBytes so I ran a scan; this was before the Killbox instructions you posted this afternoon.
Ran SuperantiSpyware once more and it came up clean.
Here's another HJT Log:

I did run a scan. I remember it finding a DLL file which looked familiar. I think I read about it while I was reading up on PErsonal Guard. IIR it's the file that allows PG to install itself and phone home...
I did not have an option to save any log file w/ MWB though. After running MWB, I ran SAS and it came up 'No Threats Detected'.
The HJT logfile above is the newest. |

All right.
Download and run This Batch File.
After you are finished, restart the computer.
Let me know if any errors appear. |

Hi :
Eventually you should uninstall that extremely outdated Version of Sun's
Java that showed up in the Log(s) you posted . Since you MAY have more
than 1 outdated version, I recommend you run the FREE "JavaRa" from
http://raproducts.org . Then get Sun's latest from www.java.com .
Also noticed an outdated ( serious security Issue ) version of the contantly
under malware attack Adobe Reader . At a minimum should Update that
program; however, I recommend the SAFER and FREE "Foxit Reader"
from www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader . |

SpiritWind - Please don't post in other people's topics when they are getting help with malware problems. I know you mean well - I did the same thing - but the moderators are just trying to help, so if you want to suggest something, send a personal message to the moderator if u picked up on something they didn't.

SpiritWind; I appreciate your input. And you're right, I need to update a lot of things, Adobe being one of them. It's something I've been putting off for a while.
Once I get my log file cleaned up I'll be more diligent with updating the other apps like I should.
And as for not getting back w/ Hackman; I've been installing Windows 7 on my office PC for the last couple days so that's where my attention's been. I'll run your batch file and repost a HJT log shortly.
Sorry for the delay. |

Okay, I see something that is possibly malicious. If it is, it could be a problem.
Go to Virustotal. Click on the Browse button and paste in the following pathway:
C:\Windows\System32\logon.exe
If you can't find that one, try...
C:\Windows\logon.exe
Let me know the results. |

Hi BastardAle :
Since you expressed a willingness to make this computer more secure by
"upgrading" out-of-date programs, you could do so more easily by using
the FREE Secunia "Software Inspector", available at
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online . However, this program
will NOT work with your current, extremely out-of-date version of Sun's
Java . Would need to follow the recommendation in my previous Post
by getting the latest Java from Sun to use "Software Inspector" . |

For C:\Windows\System32\logon.exe it said "0 bytes size received"
For C:\Windows\logon.exe it said file cannot be found |

All right, lets try fixing it. Normally files that are 0 KB according to Virustotal are malicious.
1. Fix with HijackThis
Please re-open HijackThis and put a checkmark next to the following entry:
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe logon.exe
now click Fix Checked
Please restart your computer and post an updated HijackThis log. Let me know if you get any errors. |

That's cool, shows that the infection is gone .
Cleanup time, download and install Comodo System Cleaner. Run the Privacy, Disk and Registry Cleaner.
Keep it in safe deletion mode and fix everything it says is safe to fix.
Let me know if you run in to any problems.
Don't forget to update all your software (such as Java) and update Windows. |
