If you got fired, you don't put the job on your resume and you don't bring it up. It doesn't matter why you got fired.
Hopefully, you'll get internships or co-ops ... but any job worked during school is a good sign for an employer. It shows that you're a hard worker.
You'll be better able to make decisions regarding which stream to take as you progress and you can always change a later on ... so don't stress about it too much. |

| I agree on the internship/coop/job stuff, but expect competition. Heard some stats on the radio this morning that were REALLY bad in term of the hiring situation out of college. Like only 1 in 5 getting a job out of college. So every little bit of edge over other graduates help. |

Be the 1 instead of the 4 losers.
This plan has worked brilliantly for me thus far. |

Jip's plan always works. Unfortunately, we all can't be Jip.
For the rest of us, you wait. While you wait, you keep reading, experimenting, trying new things, reading some more... hone your skills and keep your eyes open and you'll most likely get your chance. |

back to the question at hand...
I just registered for a few classes. do you think this will be too much to take all together...
WEB 102 Advanced Programming Related to the Internet (4 credits)
6pm-10pm wednesdays
PCT120&122 CISCO networking I & II (4 credits) 6pm-10pm Thursdays
PCT110 PCT 110 Network Essentials (3 credits) 725p-10p Tuesdays
Is that going to be too much of an overload, or is the shit pretty similar? I would think the networking essentials might go along with the cisco, but idk? |

| Any pre-requisites on the Cisco classes? Usually they want you to know the basics for networking (Network Essentials) before you take the class, because they're concentrating on actually implementing the basics with Cisco. Depends on how they're doing those classes though. |

If you're just going to school right now, you'll be fine. If you're working full time as well, it might be a bit much. But you'll ultimately have to figure out what you're capable of.
I just completed the first of 4 Cisco classes myself, though at a different school. In the first Cisco class, there will most likely be some overlap with the Networking Essentials class but the second Cisco class is all routers (Cisco routers to be more precise), so you won't see much overlap there. |

Lot of searching, taking as many internships as you can to help network, working your butt off to get that good first impression. It's all incremental, but every little bit helps.
"Overall, results of NACE’s 2009 Student Survey found that just 19.7 percent of the Class of 2009 who had applied for jobs had one by the end of April. In contrast, 23 percent of graduates with an internship under their belt had a job in hand at that time. For those who didn’t do an internship, the job market was especially unwelcoming: Just 14 percent of those who hadn’t been interns landed jobs as of April."
“It’s not surprising that employers look first to their interns—who have a track record with the company—when they have jobs to fill,” says Marilyn Mackes, NACE executive director.

If you're asking, chances are it is too much for you. Those who can do a full course-load and work 20+ hours a week are people who don't ask .. they just do it.
No offense intended. |

I stand by my assessment.
You don't study .. your posts are illiterate because you don't take the time to use punctuation or grammar. In my experience, these are all early indicators of what I call 'failing at life'.
You'll either learn to work harder and take pride in your appearance, or you'll continue on this path and wonder why you were part of the 4 rather than the guy who gets the job.
You can respond and offer excuses and tell me that you're capable of writing properly 'when you want to' but time will prove me right.
You know that old saying 'You can't judge a book by the cover?'.
Utter bullshit. You can and we do it everyday. |

Wow talk about being a dick! I didn't feel I needed to use punctuation on an internet forum. It's hilarious to me, that you want to get on someones case, and say this is an early warning sign of "failing at life". Thanks... that was a good laugh.
You think you can judge someone by how they type on the 'net? LOL
Work harder and take pride on my appearance? wtf are you talking about? Im getting straight A's because I dont need to study... I learn it once and im good to go.
so before you grow your e-penis and being a huge dick...think before you speak. |

Internet forums are archived through Google. So, theoretically a prospective employer could Google search you (though I doubt they will know your screenname) and see how you type.

Yes, you can. People judge other people, it's human nature.

What's your secret? Most people have to study to do well in their classes. Granted my only experiences are from a 4-year university. In my case, even studying sometimes isn't good enough.

The difference between us is that you're just starting to learn and I'm well established in the field that you're trying to join.
Think about that for a while.
I know I'm right. You're insulted and think that makes you right. You think I'm being a dick because I'm judging you. Here is a little wake-up call: everyone judges everyone. I'm just honest about it.
You're insulted. Fine. My observations are built on years of experience and they have led me to the correct conclusions often enough that I'm quite successful in the field you've chosen.
Think about that as well.
Finally, consider the fact that you can change. I hope you do. You're proud of getting an A average but you admit that you've done little to deserve it. You haven't worked for it ... you've just absorbed some material. This suggests that either you're extremely intelligent or you're taking very easy courses. Given your posts, the questions you've asked and the way that you present yourself, the latter option is most likely.
At some point, you're going to be challenged. So far, every indication you've given is that you'll fold and find something easier to do. Unlike most people, I'm telling you this now so that you'll be prepared to make an effort rather than turning away and looking for an easier solution.
This has nothing to do with my 'e-penis' ... this conversation has no bearing on my ego. I'm actually trying to help you.
Again .. this is just advice. You can take it or leave it. I honestly don't care. But I do suggest that you consider the fact that harsh and honest advice is better for you than someone catering to your ego and trying to make you feel better. Not everyone is interested in your feelings. I'd rather see you suck it up and improve but the only way you'll do that is if you look at yourself honestly. |
