I'm sorry if these questions are moronic, but I've held back on going the Steam route because I don't know the answers and you all seemed like you were the best source for help.

1. How does Steam play with SP 2 and Zone Alarm?
2. What happens if I buy HL2 over Steam and then wipe my HD?
3. Are product downloads arranged in such a way that I could burn them to CDs if I wanted to?

Finally, what's everyone's general thoughts on Steam? I've heard some horror stories from early adopters, but I assume that the kinks have been largely worked out by now. Am I better off buying over Steam and pre-loading, or waiting until the thing hits stores and getting the Silver pack on DVD?

Thanks!

I just recently purchesed the Half Life 2 Silver package using Steam.

1. How does Steam play with SP 2 and Zone Alarm?

I have both SP2, and Zone Alarm. I have not run into a single confict with either. Once ZA see that Steam is trying to make the conection to the internet the pop up diaglog pops up, and I simply allow it thru. (i'm sure you're familier with that already)

2. What happens if I buy HL2 over Steam and then wipe my HD?
3. Are product downloads arranged in such a way that I could burn them to CDs if I wanted to?

I just did the whole Steam thing last night, so i'm still new to how it all works.

Here is a link to the Steam support page:

http://steampowered.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/steampowered.cfg/php/enduser/entry.php

And the forums:

http://www.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?s=03dcd39e0f07f69742b5244d6354afb5&threadid=148079

I purchased the Silver Pack which includes:

Half Life 2*
Counter Strike: Source
Day of Defeat: Source*
Half Life: Source*
plus
Half Life
Opposing Forces
Counter Strike
CS: Condition Zero
CS: Condidtion Zero Deleted Scenes
Day of Defeat
Ricochet
Team Fortress Classic
Deathmatch Classis

and a few other programs...

* not available yet

I have tested, and played all the above, and they all run just fine. I would assume any of the aforementioned horror stories are now a thing of the past.

EDIT: for grammar

to save some confusion in the future... sans means "without"... not "with"

i have been using steam since the day it was publically released.

i have SP2 but not ZA, and i have no problems,

if you purchase a game and reformat, then all you have to do reinstall steam and download the games that you have purchased, they are binded to the account that you used when you set it up, like all my games are bound to my account toidiochsyp@hotmail.com

you can not burn the files to CDs unless you wanted to burn all the cgf files to CDs. the CFG files are what is created when it says unpacking files to hard drive when you first go to install a game.

and i recently purchased the HL2 silver pack, and my steam install with everything installed and preloaded is 8.249mb :)

Quote:
When you purchase a game through Steam, the game is registered directly to your Steam Account. You will not need to enter a CDKey to retrieve your game, you will only need your to login to your Steam Account to get access to your games. Games purchased online do not include a CDKey, a physical CD or a manual. Games purchased through Steam do not expire and are a one-time charge (not a recurring fee).
