I feel like butting in for a stupid conversation...
The whole thing that keeps Linux from being a gamer platform overnight is of course the lovely API known as Direct3D. There is a bit of hope though for Linux gamers now, since Sony most likely is using OpenGL for the graphics API on the PlayStation 4 (otherwise, they'd have to pay licensing fees to Microsoft... which I don't think they'd want). So who knows? Considering Epic has a PS4 demo of Unreal Engine 4, maybe we'll see the day when UE4 games ask if you want to use OGL or D3D. Either way, the point is, PS4 is x86-64 based using OGL. Higher end games on Linux have a future. Unfortunately not so much the games from 2005-2012 that still use D3D... Of course, this won't mean Linux will become a gaming platform just like that. It'll take a while.
However, I hope there's still a distro out there that makes things easy for users. Ubuntu, sure, but it's not really Windows-like in terms of UI. If you want to attract users, make your UI either the same experience, or better.
