Long-awaited Doom 3 Leaked Online
It's ironic that the game that spawned the whole concept of try before you buy software is being pirated and leaked in its entirety on the Internet. For those not in the know, Doom 3 is the much anticipated follow-up to the cult classic Doom, which took the first person shooter to a whole new level back in the day.

This past Sunday over 50,000 copies were downloaded on file sharing networks despite the hefty 1.5 GB file size. The game is expected to cost about $55 retail when it hits stores this week, and id software the creator is devastated by the lost revenue after pouring nearly 20 million into the development.

I'd type more, but I'm playing my legit copy of Doom 3. (just taking a short break)

And some were complaining about the cost. I wonder why it cost so much....

"despite the 1.5G size".......
not that HL2 trailer i downloaded is almost 600MB. i am not encouraging downloading pirated games but how could a 6CD game be only 1.5G?

I few stores goofed it and sold it early. Best Buy got a special date along with a few other retailers that allowed them to start selling it late last night / early this morning. One of the Best Buys near here, in Plano TX, had a party last night where they reopened the store at 12:01 to sell it. Apparently there was an ID rep there giving out shirts etc.

If you uncompress Doom3's pk4 files, there's 3.71 GB of data...

My Sarcasm Meter(TM) didn't give me a definitive reading on this one so you will have to forgive me if I misinterpreted your post.

I hope that you are not implying that ID set a preemptive price increase in anticipation of illegal copying. Or worse, that among the other continuously defined mythical properties of "software piracy" (arrrrg matey! I be stealin' yer code!) there is some kind of retro influence on release prices.

u serious that it will be sold out? I mean the game is 55 bucks sheesh. Well tommorow, imma tell my lil bro to head down to EB games quick and see if they have it. I dunno if its worth 55 bucks, cuz its mostly single player (oh yeh 4 player multiplayer, what fun :( ), but with all the advertisment, i really want that game

I know that Doom 3 cost alot more then the run of the mill PC game to develop, so thats mostly why it cost so much. But the stealing of all games isn't helping things.

When I asked if anybody was surprised, I ment that when was the last time you saw a game get released and it wasn't pirated on the net?

Also, yes, If you find a copy of Doom 3 in stores this week, consider yourself lucky.

If you're downloading a 1.7GB version then you're just wasting space and bandwidth, because everyone knows bin/cue always takes up more space then the data it actually contains... take the bin, convert it to ISO, and you have about 1.5 GB... There's actually only about 1.46 GB of data in the install directory, and like past id games, Doom III doesn't have to be installed, all the files can simply be copied to hard drive, so there are also 1.46 GB versions that don’t contain the cd installer or dx9b installer, but only the base files and the doom3.exe...

Not that any of us would pirate a game from one of the few GREAT game companies just to save a few pennies.

Right?

RIGHT?

It's not about saving money, it's about avoiding a waste of money... that's why I always try before I buy, if the game can keep me entertained for three-four levels, it's worth buying. Demos my ass, they're always too short, and you cant really see if the game gets too repetitive after few levels, so demos don't do it for me. However, in this case, I bought even before I tried, but I just didn't want to wait few more days...
