I'm going to go form XP to Windows 7. Do I need to use the Steam back up games feature (I'm assuming it saves your 'save game' files)? It is taking forever and I want to get started on the Windows 7 install!!

After the Windows 7 install I will still have access to the drive where my 'gave game' files are. So when I'm up and running on Windows 7 and log into Steam I can I will down load the games again and move my 'save game' files accordingly. It will probably still take forever but I can let it run over night. Do I have this right?

BTW. Why do steam downloads take an eternity? I'm setup for high speed?

Yes, you can simply login to your account and download your games once again. It's exactly what I did when I moved from Vista to Windows 7 and it worked fine. Insofar as slow download speed is concerned just how slow are we talking? Unless the steam servers are really overtasked, which really only seems to happen during crazy sales, I usually get speeds of around 1 to 2 megabytes per second. You might want to try changing your location in Steam and see if another set of Steam servers gets you faster downloads.

Generally, you would just need to move the Steamapps folder as described here. However, mostly Vavle games will save their games here. Or they will save them in the cloud. Other third-party games will save to the My Documents folder. And there are even some games will save to a hidden Appdata folder.
