I just started playing the game, and at 1920x1080 resloution, the game is 100% unplayable at very high settings. I get around 30 fps at some places, at which time it is possible to play. But as soon as something blows up around me (which is often), the framerate will dip below 10. I tried it on high instead of very high, and the framerates were almost identical, no real change at all. I would turn the quality down to medium or low, but I shouldn't have to. I am running a i7 860 @ 3.6 ghz, and a HD 5850. This is a system that can almost run crysis maxed. It blows through almost every current game at ease. Why should I not be able to play Split Second maxed?

It's possible that you need to wait to either an update from the Split/Second guys to fix a bug with your hardware, or an update from ATI for your 5850 to work better with Split/Second. I haven't played the game, so that's my best educated guess.

I play the game on an i5/750 running at 4.2GHz with a 5770 at 1920x1080 with high settings and it never stutters or lags ... so I'm pretty sure it isn't your hardware.

If you're running the latest drivers, you can cross that off the list as well, since I'm running them without any problems.

Since it is the explosions / track mangling that is causing issues, I suspect it might have something to do with the Havok physics engine that the game uses during 'power plays'. Do you have anything else running in the background that might cause the CPU to hiccup?

How much ram are you running?

Are you running AVG? If so, are you running in game mode?

I'm running 4 gb of RAM, and no, nothing is running in the background. I have Windows Security Essentials running. I also am fairly certain I have the latest drivers, why would they make so much of a difference though?

Edit: Actually, I was wrong. I updated to the latest drivers and it runs much, much smoother. Thanks for the help, maybe next time I wont be so stupid

A little off topic, but nice overclock on that 750 Jip!
