Maximum PC

Sony just released a firmware update, that disables older PS3's from running linux.
If you choose NOT to upgrade, you will not be allowed to play games online, or connect to the Playstation Network to download movies or games.
When I bought this 60gig model , I got it for its backward compatibility withe the PS1 & 2, and the choice to run linux.

This blows.... and no , its NOT a April Fool's joke.

Do you like running Linux on it? What do you see as the bennies?

I got this update on the 2 PS3's I own, the update was shocking to me specially since I own a Slim and when you get the Slim you cannot install Linux on it. I like the idea of this update as I don't or didn't plan on installing Linux on any ps3.

The advertising campaign is now shot - it cannot do everything now. How lame.

How many people do you really think were running linux on their PS3's?? I would place a wager that it was less than 1%. Probably like .1%

I tried it once a few years back when i was without a functioning home computer, I quickly found out that the version of yellowdog linux i was using required a progressive scan TV in order to work. So i restored the original PS3 OS and never looked back. Linux has a low adoption rate even among PC enthusiasts, how many console gamers even know what Linux is? I'm more annoyed and perplexed by the complete removal of PS2 compatibility on the PS3 slim while at the same time continuing to include the virtual memory card creation utility.

I can understand why people would want the option to run Linux off of a PS3. Also, someone got pretty miffed over this move and they vow to do something about it - not sure who it is. But, more power to him (or her?).
