The console market seems to be creating some excitement. They are re-launching Batman: AA with 3D glasses. Resident Evil creator is thinking of doing a 3D horror game.

And, there are TV sets that are being released with 3D effect enchancements. They had Gears of War 2 running on a Samsung TV that created a 3D type of effect for the game.

I do remember one of the nVidia card makers releasing a 3D effect card. But, I don't think that went anywhere.

I am wondering, does anyone game with 3D visors on the PC? Is it something that has to be coded into the game, or can the effect be created via hardware?

I don't own anything but I have played a little on 3D. A long time ago I went to a Ham (Radio >_>) Fest and they had a display there where you could play Quake 3 and Tomb Raider with these special (ie fucking heavy) 3D glasses. The effect was barely noticeable and gave me a headache after about 15 minutes. The glasses alone were over $100 too so that kind of turned me off of the whole idea.

The technology has improved quite a bit though (that was almost 10 years ago). The 3d effect can probably be rendered via hardware only now and days but I suspect games developed with it in the first place will look much crisper and have more "depth" in the effect.

Not sure how much you are wanting to know, but here's a good deal of information about it.

MaxPC actually posted about this when L4D came out. There was a 3D hack found here but can be used for any game. This is my only experience with it since well the 3D kit nVidia has it a tad expensive. However it does work and its quite mind boggling. However, this isn't the best solution for 3D as colors are a bit washed and it does cause some eyestrain after a while.
