Hi everyone, it has been awhile since I last posted at MaxPC. Forgive me if I sound ignorant as a result of my hiatus from these forums.

I have just been hit by a moment of inspiration and I realized how useful a nice NAS box could be to my media experience. I am really hoping to store some videos and music along with some documents on a NAS storage device, so that I could connect to them remotely over the network and also through the internet with my desktop or laptop. What I really need to know, though, is whether building a small Linux box running Gentoo would be able to fulfill that purpose easily, or if I would be better off just buying a dedicated NAS box like the MyBook World. I really like the added versatility that a Linux box would have, but I am fairly new to Gentoo. Would setting Gentoo up for a NAS box be fairly straightforward? Also, how good is Gentoo's security for running a NAS (so that hackers won't be able to potentially access the machine and delete or take sensitive data)?

Wow, that was a longer post than I initially planned. Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.

doing anything in Gentoo isn't what I would call "straight forward". However the documentation is the best there is. Period.

It would be a great learning experience and the versatility would be much greater.

I haven't messed with Gentoo since 2006.1-ish?

If you have an existing box, transforming it into a linux-based NAS device would be a fun learning experience.

If you don't, buying the hardware will probably be more expensive than just buying a cheap NAS box and stuffing it full of TB drives.
