I am trying to use a 23" widescreen that supports 1920x1080 resolution but can't seem to get the OS to put out that resolution. I tried using the generic 1920x1080 monitor driver and setting the xorg.conf file to a 1920x1080 resolution but can't seem to get it working. Any help is appreciated.

It sounds like you need to add the mode lines to your xorg.conf file. I had to do that a couple times to get the 1440x900 resolution out of my old widescreen.

Here is a good overview of modelines if you are not familiar. Most of the information you can get from the manufacturer website, or at least I was able to.
