I have an old laptop, a gateway solo, with a 500 mhz pentium (i think) and 160 mb of ram. I want to give it to my brother. Which distro would be the best? It only needs to run a word processor (probably open office) and go online.

Xubuntu is nice. Oh, but DSL and Puppy are even smaller.

I was under the impression that puppy was only a live CD that ran in the RAM. can it be installed? I've never heard of DSL.

Any LIVE version of Linux can be installed to the HD. They're just cool because they CAN be run from a CD, instead of just the HD.

Honestly, I wouldn't expect much from that hardware. It's still usable, bit you'll always notice it could be so much better. Anyway, I'd suggest a minimal install of Debian or Ubuntu server (just a very stripped down version of Ubuntu) and load your own desktop environment like Fluxbox or Windowmaker.
